Question 1

A simply supported pre-stressed concrete beam in Figure Q2 has subjected to an initial pre-stress force, 1250 kN. The beam
3
supports 12 m of span and carries the concrete density and imposed load of 24 kN/m and 10 kN/m respectively.

a) Calculate the section properties of the pre-stressed beam (Area, centroid gravity of concrete, moment inertia and section
modulus)
(10 marks)

b) Determine the extreme fibre stresses at mid span at transfer and service. Given α=0.9 and β=0.8, while eccentricity is
located 345 mm from the centroid gravity of the concrete, CGC.

Question 2

Given a pre-stressed member is having parabolic tendon profile as shown in Figure Q3. The initial pre-
stressed force, 5700 kN has been applied and it carries a self weight of 12.5 kN/m during transfer. Given
the modulus elasticity, E=28x106 kN/m2, moment inertia, I=0.065 m4, Area =4.5 x105 m2, modular ratio,
m=7.0 and eccentricity at mid span, e=520 mm. Solve the followings:-

a) Calculate mid span deflection at transfer due to vertical load and pre-stressed force.

b) Determine the short term losses due to elastic shortening at the mid span and both ends, if the area of
pre-stressed tendon, Aps is given 2900 mm2. Assume the pre-stressed member is post-tensioned, ∆fp=
0.5mfco. Show the losses percentage.

stressed force of 1000 kN has been applied on it.
