Introduction:

Citrus fruits and derived products have a beneficial effect on

the human health because of its nutritional and antioxidant properties
and their consumption is associated with a decrease in the incidence of
cardiovascular disease and reduction of the risk of certain cancers and
also. During the processing of citrus fruit for juice, peels are the
primary by products and phytochemicals are abundant in citrus peels. As
you would expect, pesticide, herbicide and fungicide residues
are highest on the peel of oranges These compounds have been associated
with healthy properties ascribed to their antioxidant activity and free
radical scavenging abilities.
Phenolic compounds and antioxidant activities in citrus peel have been
widely investigated and they have been found to possess antiallergenic,
antiartherogenic, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antioxidant,
antithrombotic, cardioprotective and vasodilatory effects.

All species help move chi stagnation. Although all species share
certain properties, there are some differences; Mandarin Orange Peel is
an anti-inflammatory, cholagogue, carminative, diuretic and tonic, and
the green or unripe orange peel is a cholagogue and carminative. The
bitter Orange Peel moves chi stagnation and is a carminative, stimulant,
stomachic, expectorant and tonic. Additionally, different species/parts
have different uses. Mandarin Orange Peel – catarrh, chest congestion,
gas, indigestion; Green or Unripe Citrus Peel — abscess, bloating, breast
cancer, gall bladder congestion, liver stagnation; Bitter Orange Peel –
flatulence, indigestion, stagnation in the digestive tract, tumors.
Using the peels as a digestive aid stimulates the production of
hydrochloric acid. The high content of bioflavonoid helps to strengthen
the capillaries and tissues in the body. Orange flower water is used as
a sedative.

Meanwhile, mosquitoes are a family of small midge-like flies,

the Culicidae. Although a few species are harmless or even useful, most
cause a nuisance by sucking blood from vertebrates including humans.
Accordingly, some authorities argue that disease-bearing mosquitoes are
the most dangerous animals on earth. With increasing reports of the
harmful effects DEET has on humans, there has been a move to repellents
which are organic. These are of the kinds that have had traditional
household purposes before their being used as mosquito repellents.
Title: Anti Mosquito Repellant Candle Additive from Mandarin Orange
(Citrus reticulata blanco)

I. Objective of the Experiment:

1. This experiment will be conducted to know more the accurate

and faster way of killing mosquitoes that causes dengue.
2. To make an experiment that could really help the middle-class
families as well as everybody in avoiding to be sucked by the
mosquito carrier of dengue.

II. Statement of the Problem: This study aims to determine

whether extract from the peels of mandarin orange (citrus
Reticulata Blanco) can be a good additive for an anti-mosquito
repellant candle.

III. Background of the Study:

Mandarin Orange (Citrus reticulata blanco) is said to have an
essential oil from its peels that is used as flavoring, perfumes
and in medicinal use. An essential oil obtained from the leaves
and young twigs are called 'petit grain oil'. Yields are around
0.5%. In traditional Chinese medicine, the dried peel of the fruit
is used in the regulation of ch'i, and also used to treat abdominal
distension, and to enhance digestion. All that mandarin eating adds
up to a lot of peels. As you would expect, pesticide, herbicide
and fungicide residues are highest on the peel of oranges. The
fruit, including its peel is used to treat allergic reactions.
Another important part of the peel that is widely used is the oil
present in it. It acts as an effective insect repellent and is also
used in the production of furniture polishes. The peel initially
tastes somewhat sweet and spicy but has a bitter and pungent after-
taste.

An insect repellent is a substance applied to skin, clothing,

or other surfaces which discourages insects (and arthropods in
general) from landing or climbing on that surface. Insect repellents
help prevent and control the outbreak of insect-borne diseases such
as malaria, Lyme, dengue fever, bubonic plague, and West Nile
fever. Pest animals commonly serving as vectors for disease include
the insect’s flea, fly, and mosquito; and the arachnid tick. So, in
this case, we used candle as an insect repellant to kill mosquitoes
that causes dengue.

IV. Hypothesis:
We can say that extract from the peels of mandarin oranges will
help us to have a more accurate and faster means of killing
mosquitoes, due to high acidity this can help as an additive.

V. Methodology

Materials:
Used Candles
Candle Wick
Mandarin Oranges
Pan
Candle Molder
Container
Mosquito Net

Procedure:

Collecting Mosquitoes

1. First, we filled the container with water depending on the

container where you will make the experiment.
2. Second, we will wait until we find some mosquito eggs(wrigglers).
3. Then, we covered it with fishing net.
4. After which, we just waited for the wrigglers to fully developed
into an adult mosquito.

Candle with Extract of Mandarin Orange Making

1. First, we need to gather all the materials for the candle

making. These are the candles, and mandarin oranges.
2. Second, we extracted the peels of our mandarin oranges (Citrus
reticulata blanco)
3. Next, we’ll going to cut the candle, but make sure we’ll get
the candle wick of it.
4. Then, we will melt the candle in the pan with a moderate
temperature.
5. After the candle has been melted, we will mix the melted
candle with the extracted peels of our mandarin oranges
(Citrus reticulata blanco).
6. Let the mixture, blend properly.
7. Then we will put our mixture in a candle mold
8. Finally we allowed it to dry up.

 For the final procedure, after we have collected

mosquitoes and made our candle, we can now test and light
up our candle with our mosquitoes. Ifyou can’t believe in
this, use an ordinary candle and light it up for one day
at a place that is full of mosquitos and the next day
light up a candle with the peels of mandarin orange
(Citrus reticulata blanco) and see the difference.

VI. Observation:
We have observed that our anti mosquito repellant candle
additive from mandarin orange is a good anti mosquito repellant
because it kills mosquitoes rapidly. As we light up our candle,
mosquitoes, die faster. the scent of the mandarin oranges helps
the candle to be more effective as an anti mosquito repellant
candle.

VII. Conclusion, Recommendation

Therefore, we conclude that extract from the peels of mandarin
orange (Citrus reticulata blanco) can be a good additive for an
anti mosquito repellant. It could be one of the best product of
country for avoiding dengue if possible to be sold on markets, it
could be cheaper and effective. With this great idea, middle-
class family could avoid mosquito without paying higher on buying
repellants ,it will be a great difference to everyone as well.
