These reef-friendly sun
creams will protect marine
life as well as your skin
W
e’re all aware of the dangers of
sun exposure nowadays. A few
decades ago it would’ve been a
bottle of baby oil by your side at the
beach, now it’s an oversized sun hat
and an SPF of a reasonable number (I’d always
recommend at least factor 30, regardless of your
skin tone).
However, recently there’s been an increasing
awareness that what might be protecting us could
be damaging something else: coral reefs. Certain
chemicals found in thousands of sun creams are
toxic to the algae that coral systems depend on –
when these algae die, the coral becomes bleached
and also eventually dies. And with an estimated
14,000 tons of sun cream washing into our oceans
each year, it’s time to pay a bit more attention to
precisely what we’re slathering on.
Opinions differ about exactly how many chemicals
are harmful to coral (there is also a strong argument
against anything in nanoparticle form, which is more
easily absorbed into the bodies of living things,
humans included), but the two most common ones
to look out for are oxybenzone and octinoxate. Last
year, Hawaii passed a bill banning the sale of sun
creams containing these two ingredients, with
Florida’s Key West following suit earlier this year.
If in doubt, look for sunscreens labelled as
mineral or physical, instead of chemicals, these
use filters such as zinc oxide or titanium dioxide,
and work by sitting on top of the skin and deflecting
the sun’s rays (opposed to chemical filters, which
act like a sponge, absorbing and dissipating UV
rays within the skin). Otherwise, simply take a few
seconds to read the ingredients list before popping
it in your shopping basket.
The term “reef-safe” is ambiguous and
uncertified, but these are some of the best
“reef-friendly” sun creams I’ve found on the market
at the moment.

year. Then I just walked off and they played sad

Adam is always happiest at home. He says,
“I travel to so many beautiful places but there’s
no place like home in my opinion. I love being
with the family and keeping it local. Normal
farmers in the area drive around on tractors
peeping over other people’s hedges whereas
I get to go behind the scenes and have a real
look. Even to Balmoral where I actually bought
a bull from the Queen. I met her afterwards and
she asked me about it, which was lovely.”
Home for Adam is in the rented Cotswolds’
farmhouse he shares with partner Charlotte,
(they met at school when they were 16) and
children Ella and Alfie. He has made sure they
have had a similar upbringing to his own.
“My childhood was so healthy and free,” he
says. “My mum made all our food and cut our
hair. It was like The Waltons. But getting back to
nature was always important and my kids have
grown up on a farm, too. Although one is going
into an events company and my son wants to
go into finance, they could both lamb a ewe
and go out with the sheepdog and herd sheep.
They’re very capable.”
A lover of the great outdoors, we imagine he
isn’t a huge fan of the showbiz side of the job.
“I love visiting big cities like London and I go
shopping for clothes and watches, enjoy the
theatre and the museums, but I wouldn’t want
to live there.”
As we get ready to leave, packed off with
a piece of homemade orange cake from the
café for the train home, Adam seems perfectly
happy as he watches guests enjoying their day
out at his farm.
“When I look around at the wildlife and the
trees I know it means as much to other people
as it does to me. That’s why I’m more relaxed on
the farm. Pulling my wellies on and getting stuck
in. In the fields I can act the fool and do what
I like. I just love everything about it.” ●

Understanding
energy balance
Unfortunately, this is key to fat
loss. Most of us love food so it’s
a hard pill to swallow – but it’s
true. Calories in must be less than
calories out if you want lose fat.
If you eat more calories than
you expend you will put on weight.
Think of it like this – if you earn
(eat) more than you spend
(exercise), then you’re going to
get into debt (put on weight).
The only way to get out of this
debt is to spend (eat) less than
you earn.
Get to grips
with your diet
Getting your diet in check doesn’t
have to be boring. Yes, calorie
counting is a great tool if you need
to lose weight and yes you will
need to be in a calorie deficit – but
you can still have fun.
Don’t be too restrictive, however
tempting that short-term benefit
might be. Reducing calories to so
few that you are starving is not
sustainable – which is where the
yo-yo dieting often comes in.
Aesthetic goals can be achieved
and you can socialise. You need to
readdress your relationship with
food and realise balance is key.
Alcohol, chocolate and sweets, are
allowed in moderation. If there are
things you love then just work
them into your calorie allowance.
