Degrees of Adjective

English has three degrees of adjectives, namely, positive, comparative, and superlative.
Positive Comparative Superlative
Good Good Better Best
Fast Fast Faster Fastest
Beautiful Beautiful More beautiful Most beautiful

Unlike English, Urdu degrees of adjective don’t change their forms. See the table below for Urdu
degrees of adjective equivalent to English one given above.
Positive Comparative Superlative
‫اچھا‬ ‫اچھا‬ ‫ سے اچھا‬X ‫سب سے اچھا‬
‫تیز‬ ‫تیز‬ ‫ سے تیز‬X ‫سب سے تیز‬
‫خوبصورت‬ ‫خوبصورت‬ ‫ سے خوبصورت‬X ‫سب سے خوبصورت‬

Examples:

• -‫علی لمبا ہے‬ Ali is tall.


• -‫علی جاوید سے لمبا ہے‬ Ali is taller than Javed.
• -‫علی سب سے لمبا ہے‬ ALi is the tallest.

Use of ‫ زیادہ‬and ‫کم‬

Sometimes, in sentences, person compared to is not available, so we can simple use ‫‘ زیادہ‬more’
and ‫‘ کم‬less.’
Examples:

• -‫عمران زیادہ مویا ہے‬ Imraan is fatter/bigger (literally: more fat/big).


• -‫عمران کم مویا ہے‬ Imraan is thinner/smaller (literally: less fat/big).

Compare yourself with your best friend and write 10 comparative sentences (using “ ‫ سے‬X”)
Based on your world knowledge, please write 10 sentences in superlative construction (using
‘‫)’سب سے‬.
