PERFECT GAS LAW
1.0 OBJECTIVE
To determine the relationship between pressure and volume of an ideal gas.

2.0 THEORY
The ideal gas law is the equation of state of an ideal gas. The state pf an amount of gas is
determined by its pressure, volume and temperature. The equation has the form of:
P x V = nRuT
Where:
P = absolute pressure of gas
V = volume of gas
n = number of moles of gas
Ru = Universal Gas constant
T = Temperature in Kelvin

3.0 EQUIPMENT
Gas Properties Simulation

4.0 PROCEDURES
1) On the left check box, under Constant Parameter choose none.
2) Click on Advanced Options, and make sure Molecules Collide is selected.
3) Also make sure that Heavy Species is selected.
4) Pump in two squirts of Gas.
5) Choose Measurement Tools, and select Layered Tool, and Ruler. These will give you
box dimensions so that you can calculate the volume of the box.
6) Change the length of the box to 8 nm.
7) Record your data in the table below.
8) Calculate your volume (the height and width of the box are the same)
9) Repeat and record your data by making the box 1 nm smaller.
5.0 RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS

1.84 186.44 4.5 5 1.01x10-7 1.88x10-5 264 8.58x10-9

2.23 225.95 4.5 4 8.10x10-8 1.83x10-5 264 8.34x10-9

b) When temperature is kept constant, the ideal gas law will become Boyle’s Law become
Boyles n (number moles of gas), R (Universal gas constant) and T (temperature) are all
constant.

c) From experiment n (number moles of gas) can be determined from the Ideal Gas Law
Equation.
n = (PV) / (RUT)
n = (118.55 * 1.62E-7)/(8.314*264)
n = 8.75E-9

As the pressure decreasing, the volume of the gas is also decreasing.
