International Alumni Family and Friends Scholarship

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

1.0. ESTABLISHMENT
1.1.The International Alumni Family and Friends Scholarship has been established to
leverage and engage the UON international alumni community to raise the profile
on the University internationally and to contribute to the 2020 international load
targets. This will be a mutually beneficial scholarship program that recognises and
incentivises both the incoming international students and the alumni referrer.

2.0. DEFINITIONS
2.1. “The University” means The University of Newcastle, Australia;
2.2. "Scholarship" means the International Alumni Friends and Family Scholarship;
2.3. "Scholar" means a recipient of a scholarship;
2.4. “Alumnus” means a person who has graduated from The University of Newcastle with
a qualification at Bachelor level or higher

3.0. ELIGIBILITY
3.1. The successful scholar must:
3.1.1. Be an international full-fee paying student.
3.1.2. Be referred by an Alumnus of The University.
3.1.3. Be the only student referred by a given Alumnus for receipt of the
scholarship in a given year.
3.1.4. Be a citizen of a country other than Australia, and be in Australia on a
student visa for the primary purpose of studying.
3.1.5. Be commencing in an undergraduate or postgraduate coursework
program with The University in 2020.
3.1.6. Be enrolled full-time.
3.1.7. Be studying on-campus with The University within Australia.
3.1.8. Not hold another scholarship for the same program of study.

4.0. SELECTION
4.1. Only applicants referred by an alumnus of The University, via the International
Alumni Family and Friends scholarship application process, are eligible for this
scholarship.
4.2. An individual Alumnus may refer one (1) scholar per year for this scholarship.
Scholars referred by an individual Alumnus that are in excess of this limit will not
be eligible for the scholarship without prior approval from The University.
4.3. Eligibility for this scholarship will be assessed alongside the scholar’s application
for admission to a University program.
4.4. Only applicants who commence and enroll in an eligible undergraduate or
postgraduate coursework program with The University in 2020 are eligible for this
scholarship.
4.5. The University reserves the right not to award a scholarship.
5.0. CONDITIONS OF AWARD
5.1. The scholarship is tenable for the first year of the eligible program.
5.2. The scholarship must be taken up in the semester or trimester for which it was
awarded.
5.3. The scholar shall continue to fulfil the relevant eligibility criteria specified in clause
3, for the duration of the scholarship, unless varied in accordance with clause 10.1.
5.4. The scholar shall continue to fulfil the relevant selection criteria specified in clause
4, for the duration of the scholarship, unless varied in accordance with clause 10.1.
5.5. The scholarship is subject to review each semester. The scholar must maintain full
time enrolment for continued eligibility.
5.6. The scholarship and the number available are subject to approval and funding in
each academic year.

6.0. BENEFIT
6.1. The scholarship benefit is a maximum of $10000, payable as a tuition fee waiver. This
will be applied against tuition fees for the first two terms of study in the eligible
program at a rate of $5000 per term.
6.2. The scholarship will be applied directly to the recipient’s UON customer account
around census date in the relevant semesters of study.

7.0. SUSPENSION OF SCHOLARSHIP BENEFIT


7.1. There is no provision for leave or deferral of this scholarship.

8.0. SPECIAL CONSIDERATION


8.1. Where a scholar is not meeting the conditions of the scholarship due to illness,
injury or other extenuating circumstances, they may apply in writing to The
University for special consideration. Applications must be supported by
appropriate documentary evidence and a decision will be made in consultation
with the relevant area funding the scholarship.

9.0. TERMINATION
9.1. A scholarship shall terminate before its due date of conclusion if the scholar:
9.1.1. Fails to fulfil any conditions of the scholarship; or
9.1.2. Relinquishes the scholarship; or
9.1.3. Ceases to be a student of the University of Newcastle, whichever
occurs first.

10.0. VARIATION
10.1. The Senior Deputy Vice Chancellor, Global Engagement and Partnerships may
vary any of the provisions of these conditions, where satisfied that exceptional
circumstances warrant variation.
