Identity  Article’s Title : Creativity in ELT:

ideas for developing
creative thinking
 Author : Antonia Clare
 Chapter :6
 Pages : 45-56

The purpose of the paper The aim of this paper is to illustrate how teacher can foster a
culture of creativity in their classroom by demonstrating realistic
ideas for using image, as well as engaging the emotions and senses
to create short text and poems. Further, this paper encourages
teacher to explore the use of framework to enable students to
become more involved and innovative in their learning.

Discussion In clare’s paper, she stated that the creativity involved in our
everyday actions and the choices we make. She illustrated that
statement with the way we arrange flowers in a vase, elaborate on
a favourite cooking recipe, find a solution to a difficult problem, or
even just in the words we choose in order to express our ideas.
In line with ELT, teacher creativity certainly is very much a part of
how teacher choose to plan and prepare their lessons.
Then clare discussed briefly at the idea of what being creative
means and how it’s relation to the language classroom.
In her statement, she adapted Pugliese’s book and stated that by
being creative, teachers grow, teacher find ways to engage their
students, so student motivation increases, which in turn feeds into
increasing teacher motivation.
After that, Clare discussed about creative vs. creative thinking.
She stated that criticial and creative thinking are operate together,
by solving problem critically many creative ideas are generated
and evaluated, multiple possible solutions are explored in a short
amount of time, and unexpected connections are drawn
spontaneously. In line with that, it’s incredibly important to bring
creativity into the classroom, becase it’s allow teachers the time
and the freedom to develop, and to focus on higher order thinking

skills, such as creating and evaluating, rather than getting stuck
with the lower order skills of just understanding and remembering.
Then, Clare illustrated a few practical ideas. She showed that to
trigger creative thinking teacher can use a framework such as Six
word story. Students can have lots of fun inventing their own
stories. Other than that, teacher can use “My life in film”, this is
spoken framework by ask learners to think of lots of different
ideas; flexibility from a different perspective. By speak their life
like a film, it helping them become more adventurous with their
language. Further than that, teacher can using emotions and the
senses just like writing an emotion poem. Give a framework to
boost confidence of learners. Talking memories can also used by
ask learners to write a description of a scene from their own
childhood, focusing specifically on the details of why the memory
is so special, and the rich language used for describing the
different senses.
That’s all a few practical ideas that Clare can shows us, then
Clare conclude that it’s very important to try to be creative in
teaching, even when it’s hard to fit it in, because creative teaching
is real, passionate teaching. Creativity is at the heart of genuine
learning. As Martin Luther King Jr. said, “Almost always, the
creative, dedicated minority have made the world better.”

The strengths of paper 1. In terms of layout, this paper has a great appearance with
neatly written and regularly written. The language is clear
and unambiguous, the writing is not verbose and author
ideas are expressed in a simple and effective way. The
grammar, punctuation and terminology used are correct.
When I read the article I didn’t find any grammatical error
or words that are out of sync.
2. On aspects of the material’s discussion and presentation,
I’m very impressed by this paper. The author gives me a lot
of understanding from the basic. Clare’s paper presenting
the material starting from the basics, discussing what’s
exactly the meaning of creativity, brings me deeper by her
illustration and words. Her words really persuade me to
agree with her thought. When discussing a few practical
ideas, the author explained all the point clearly, gives a lot
of examples and suggestions in every topic and point.
3. Another thing that impressed me, the author seems like

3
invite the reader to think creative and critical while reading
her paper about “creative thinking”. Her paper provides
some questions that really engage reader. You can’t get out
of your chair when you decide to read this paper. When
you read it once, you’ll fall in love with her words and
illustration.
4. The author also provides this paper by some figures to
summarize and interpret her point.

The weaknesses of paper I can’t find any weaknesses of this paper.

Conclusion and By having this paper to be reviewed and read them, it can
Recommendation conclude that it’s not a big deal if teacher jst teach the objectives.
But, it’s gonna be a big deal if teacher fail to engage the learner’s
creative processess, because the real learning is likely not to be
there. Creative communication comes from the heart, so getting
learners to communicate something that is meaningful to
them, that is valuable and holds a personal significance, will
encourage a deeper kind of learning.
This paper gives me a lot of understanding, for me a prospective
ELT teacher. So, I really recommend this paper to be read by ELT
teacher, Prospective ELT teacher, or even another language
teacher.
