The School as Learning

Learning Environment
Episode 1

My Learning Overview_______________________________________

This Episode 1 provides an opportunity for students to examine and reflect on a school
environment that promotes learning and development.

My Intended Learning Outcome_______________________________________

In this Episode, I must be able to determine the characteristics of a school environment

that is safe, secure, and is supportive of learning.

My Performance Criteria_______________________________________________

I will be rated along the following:

 quality of my observations and documentation

 completeness and depth of analysis
 depth and clarity of classroom observation-based reflection
 completeness, organization, clarity of portfolio

My Learning Essentials__________________________________________________

A physical environment conducive for learning is one that has consistent practices that:

 keep the school safe, clean, orderly and free from distraction;
 maintain facilities that provide challenging activities; and
 address the physical, social and psychological needs of the students
My Map___________________________________________________________________

To realize my Intended Learning Outcomes, I will work my way through these steps:

My mission is to do the following tasks:

1. Visit a school. Look into 2. Accomplish the checklist

My Tools___________________________________________________________________

As you move around the campus, activity forms are provided for you to document your
observation. It is advised that you read the entire worksheet before proceeding to the
school site. A good understanding of the activities and tasks to be accomplished in the
activity sheet will yield better learning results.

School Facilities Checklist

Observation for the Classroom Visit

Read the following statement carefully. Then write your observation report on the provided
space.

1. Describe the community or neighborhood where the school is found

2. Describe the school campus. What colors do you see? What is the condition of the buildings?

3. Pass by the offices. What impression do you have of these offices?

4. Walk through the school halls, the library, and the cafeteria. Look around and find out the
other.

Name of the School Observed: Colegio de Santa Catalina de Alejandria

Location of the School: BrgyPob 3, Dumaguete City
Date of Visit: November 20, 2019

The community where the school campus is in was a highly urbanized community.
The school is located beside the church, hospital and market. There were also business
establishments surrounding it. The environment is noisy due to plying vehicles however it is
clean and not polluted.

The school in itself is very much accessible in public transportation. A key location in
the community and very easy to locate by people not loving in the community where the
school is is in. Basically it is in the heart of the city.

The school building is still in its best condition; showing no sign of decay but proper
maintenance could be done like repainting and refurbishing most especially the front of the
campus. There are also new building constructed to accommodate the growing population.

Observation for the Classroom Visit

Be guided by these tasks as you do your observation. Then accomplish the matrix to record your
data.

1. Look at the walls of the classroom. What are posted on the walls? What heroes, religious
figures, lessons, visual aids, announcements, do you see posted?

2. Examine how the pieces of furniture are arranged. Where is the teacher’s table located? How
are the tables and chairs/desks arranged?

3. What learning materials/equipment are present?

4. Observe the students. How many are occupying one room/

5. Is the room well-lit and well ventilated?

pictures of different animals.

2. Teacher’s Table There are two tables in the classroom. There is

one in the side where the stuff of the teachers
are kept while on the other one is at the center
for the teachers to used as she have her
discussion.

3. Learner’s Desk Though the classroom is not that spacious

however there is enough seats for each student
and they can freely move around if there is an
activity during the discussion.

4. Blackboard The blackboard is clean and students can easily

use it for it’s not too high.

5. Learning Materials/Visual Aids During the observation, the teacher uses a

projector and laptop in her discussion which
simply explains her lesson. She maximize the
use of facilities/ technology in integration of
her teaching-learning process.

My Analysis_______________________________________________________________

How do the school campus and the classroom in particular impact learning of the students
going to school? What are your conclusions?

 The facilities of the school campus and the classroom greatly affect the students that
go to school, because if the school and classroom is improper the students will start
to think not to go to school. I would say that if the student is not comfortable or
satisfied of a certain school, he/she will get lazy and not be on school, but if the
student is comfortable or satisfied with the facilities of a school he/she will be more
eager to attend school.

How does this relate to your knowledge of child and adolescent development/how does this
relate to your knowledge of facilitating learning?

 As future educator, by these instances I will know that there are many factors that
can affect the student to attend and not to attend school. And by knowing such
factors, I can adjust to what my students will need.

My Reflection ____________________________________________________________

1. Would you like to teach in the school environment you just observed? Why? Why
not?

 Yes. Because the school environment is very accessible, the surroundings is very
peaceful and covered by green pasture that brighten up the day and gives a cool and
cozy environment.

2. What kind of school campus is conducive to learning?

 A school that is conductive to learning is a school that has complete facilities that
will surely help and benefited by the student learners to understand the subject
matter they are studying.
3. What kind of classroom is conducive to learning?

 A classroom that is conducive to learning is a classroom with proper chairs,

functioning electric fans for the ease of students, all other facilities that will greatly
contribute for the attainment of knowledge of the students and most especially an
expert teacher by profession and by heart.

4. In the future, how can you accomplish your answer in number 3?

 For now, I will study hard so that I can be a good teacher in the future. If I have
good grades and right experiences I have no doubts that I can accomplish to become
a compassionate teacher by mind, heart and soul.

5. Write your additional learnings and insights here.

 I learned that every student has their own reaction to the environment they are in,
that’s why the teacher’s should be complex and flexible to know that.

My Learning Portfolio___________________________________________________

Narrative Description:

My Personal Illustration of an Effective School Environment

My Personal illustration of an effective school environment is an environment that

is structurally built in strong, clean external and in internal, free from noise of the
outside world so that the students will feel peaceful and concentrated. On the
classroom part, one that is conducive in learning is a classroom that has many
charts, posters, sayings and inspirational quotes as motivation and additional
information to children. Also those that have models like the Globe, projects and a
whole lot more of projects. However, we must also remember that a classroom
environment would not only refer to the physical appearance but also the social
and psychological. In this regard, a preferable social environment must support the
interaction between the teacher and students and students to students. There should
be no gap between for the students to freely express themselves. As for
psychological, the environment it must free from abuses like bullying, must have
the atmosphere of care, trust and respect, and provide opportunities for the mental
development of the students.

Poem:

Effective School Campus

A sultry feeling when entering COSCA

The sweats are dropping yet continue to howl
We went to the room that we’re assigned
And we are amazed and sat behind

The class begun, behind we listen

Conclusion turned towards ourselves
Effective campus should’ve complete facilities
So that learning experience will be at its best
Photo Illustration:

School campus that is safe, secure and enjoyable to stay for

the learners

For social environment, ideally it should be promoting

interaction not only teacher to students but also students to
students. That student should not feel any fear of expressing
their ideas in the teaching-learning process.

For psychological environment, the teacher must show

concern and openness to the students for them to feel
emotionally secure during the teaching-learning process.
They won’t fell being neglected or discriminated.
