created by the E-Learning Team and it is always growing and evolving. ~ Dennis

Online “Voice”
 Intern provided a welcoming, friendly personal introduction during course icebreaker.
 Intern provides appropriate, helpful feedback to students.
 Intern’s communication with mentor instructor and students is polite, supportive and
timely.
 Email communication with mentor instructor and students includes subject and
salutation.
 Intern’s discussion additions expand the learning and stimulate additional research,
questions and/or discussion.
 Words are sincere and open, coming from a place of mutual learning versus a place of
authority.
 Treats students as ‘valued customers.’

Intern’s self-assessment comments (upon completion).

I responded to everyone within our learning community during the Icebreaker and believe that I
have met the criteria above.

Mentor Instructor comments (upon completion).

Joanna is constantly on the discussion board. She is always communicating to everyone in the
course. She has not only met the criteria above, but has gone beyond that. She is quick to email a
student if they are having problems, and not only adds significant information to the discussion
but posts articles that support whatever topic we are working on for the module. Her words are
sincere and professional and she always treats the students as peers and equals.

Discussion interaction
 Intern promotes student understanding of the connection between course work and
professional work outside of the online classroom.
 Intern encouraged reciprocity, teamwork and collaboration
 Intern observes student posts and adds personal additions during the most appropriate
time period.
 Intern’s discussion additions expand the learning and stimulate additional research,
questions and/or discussion.
 Posts at least 3 times per week.
 Models professional presence (logs in 5 of 7 days).

Intern’s self-assessment comments (upon completion).

I log on virtually everyday to monitor the discussion, ask questions, comment on students’ posts,
and post articles to promote deeper understanding of the course content.

Mentor Instructor comments (upon completion).

Joanna posts more that 3 times a week, is present every single day, and encourages reciprocity,
teamwork and collaboration. She meets all the above criteria.

Professional Communication

 Intern’s communication with mentor instructor is polite, supportive and timely.

 Email communication with mentor instructor is brief and to the point.
 Intern is dependable and present.
 Should special circumstances arise the intern keeps the mentor instructor informed as
soon as possible.
 Intern respects a chain of command by always consulting the mentor instructor first
about any elements of student performance.
 Intern understands the need for strict confidentiality when working online. This means
that specific student information and performance data is only to be discussed with the
mentor instructor (first) and practicum supervisor.
 Participates in a weekly phone conference with mentor instructor.
 Intern is proactive, providing the required communications and reports without being
repeatedly prompted by the mentor instructor.

Intern’s self-assessment comments (upon completion).

Dr. Crum and I exchange emails each week regarding the weekly tasks to be completed, discuss
the quality of students’ contributions to the discussion board. For example, I notified Dr. Crum
about a student’s quality of work, seeking feedback prior to assigning a grade.

Mentor Instructor comments (upon completion).

Joanna has been diligent about her email communications with me. We started out with a phone
call of what my expectations were and she has met all of them. She has always shared with me
when a special circumstance has come up and we have worked out the problem together. She is
constantly consulting me first before she does anything with a student. Our emails are continuous
and meaningful. In lieu of weekly phone calls, I felt weekly emails would suffice.

Administrative/Teaching tasks (Pre-course and ongoing)
1. Reviews all links and course readings and links to be sure all are updated and available.
2. Reviews all course materials closely for needed text edits.
3. Provides feedback on course design, technical tools and dynamics.
4. Should a broken link or editing problem arise, the intern facilitates content revision with
specific and detailed feedback on where and what the problem is.

Intern’s self-assessment comments (upon completion).

I sent a list of screenshots and notes regarding some dead links prior to the course.

Mentor Instructor comments (upon completion).

Once again, Joanna never ceases to amaze me. We are working in a new environment, Canvas,
and several of the links that were active in summer term became inactive in fall term. Joanna was
right on top of that and made sure to notify me. She also constantly reviews the weekly materials
and has commented on how things should be fixed. She’s been a “right hand” person for me this
term!

Weekly tasks
1. An active discussion participant, posting at least 3 times per week.
2. Provides weekly summary of discussion to the mentor instructor that includes
consolidated discussion highlights.
3. Where appropriate, answers student questions with patience, confidence and
resourcefulness.
4. Agrees upon week’s tasks with Mentor Instructor and provides the service within the
agreed upon time frame.
5. Looks for ‘stranded posts’ (Primary posts that have not gotten a response within a
reasonable period of time.) and responds as needed.

Intern’s self-assessment comments (upon completion).

I am an active participant on the discussion board and complete the assigned weekly tasks in a
timely manner. I write to students who have not received a reply on the discussion board.

Mentor Instructor comments (upon completion).

As I said above, she is a very active participant on the discussion board, she does the assignment
weekly and posts her examples, and she is timely. She responds to grading assignments in a
timely manner and is excellent at finding ‘stranded’ posts. She also has kept a spreadsheet on
everyone’s participation in the course and noticed when a student had missed an entire week of
posting before I had to tell her of the situation. I’m quite impressed by her online presence.

Intern discussion facilitation – Guided Practice.

During the second half of the course intern will facilitate one required discussion forum.
At the end of the discussion the intern will review student participation and do a practice
evaluation of student performance using the course grade scale.

Student evaluation/grades recommended by the intern are reviewed by the Mentor Instructor
who offered feedback as needed.

The Mentor Instructor is free to use practice grades and evaluations as they see fit.

Intern’s self-assessment comments (upon completion).

I facilitate the discussion and grade the students’ contributions on a weekly basis.

Mentor Instructor comments (upon completion).

Joanna facilitates the discussion daily and I gave her the responsibilities to grade discussion and
some major projects that we had throughout the term. She is timely in submission of the grades
and grades the discussion postings weekly.

Intern tracking and feedback responsibilities

The intern will offer a weekly report to the mentor instructor on student activities within the
course. This may include:
 a summary of student participation derived from the class list tracking tools;
 a review of previous modules looking for make-up work;
 a report on students ‘missing in action’
 other types of feedback that help the mentor instructor and intern better understand
student work in the course.

Intern’s self-assessment comments (upon completion).

I emailed a query about a student who was not present in the discussion. I look for make up work
for students who request extensions and keep the instructor informed about the status.

Mentor Instructor comments (upon completion). As stated by Joanna above, she does all these
things. She has reached out to several students that have struggled to get their work done in a
timely manner. I have appreciated her kindness, compassion, and professionalism.

Intern technology tool initiation and support -

The intern will setup and facilitate one ‘optional’ synchronous conference for students. The
intern will summarize the highlights of this conference and provide these highlights to all
students. (This is often waived by the Mentor Instructor. Up for negotiation to say the least!)

Intern’s self-assessment comments (upon completion).

Additional comments by Mentor Instructor.

I have considered Joanna a gift to my course and online classroom. She is simply a natural. One
thing that we value in this program at Stout is that our online teachers have an active presence in
the classroom. Joanna has had this. In addition, she has added links to articles, lesson plans, and
other additions to help students understand the content of the course. I value her as an educator
and think that any online program would be LUCKY to have her on their staff. I highly
recommend her as an online educator. She is brilliant, kind, professional and very patient plus she
is “seen” by the students and that is a plus. She did a superior job this term, and I was lucky to not
only know her, but to get to see her work as an online educator.
