2018 Name of subject: Design Of Concrete L T P C

Structure-I
Apply to Programs :BE Civil 3 1 0 4
CET-343 Prerequisite: Student should have knowledge of
strength of materials & Structural Analysis. Total hours = 45
Objectives
To learn about Design procedure of different structural element.
To make students aware with the basic concepts and principles of structural
design.
To makestudentsawarewith design specifications & IS Codal provisions
Subject Outcome
1 Student will get knowledge about the use of concrete and steel to construct the
different structure, knowledge about Design Codal provisions, Quantifying the
effect of different loads on the structural elements and will also become familiar
with the permissible limits of structure against shear and torsional failure.
2 Students will be able to identify the characteristics properties of the material,
Limit state method of design, behavior of the structure at collapse and different
failure. Design of roof slab for rooms and halls.
3 Student will be able to design structure for Shear and Torsion, bond
strength against collapse, different types of columns and their design
4 procedure.
Students will learn different designing methodologies and make their
useeffectively.
UNIT-I (15HOURS)

INTRODUCTION: Reinforced concrete, definition, properties of materials, grades of concrete

and reinforcing steel ,stress strain curves, permissible stresses, concrete structural systems-slabs,
beams, columns and foundations, design philosophies working stress design, ultimate strength and
limit state design method, limitations of working stress method and ultimate strength method.

LIMIT STATE OF COLLAPSE (SHEAR, BOND AND TORSION): Introduction-Design for

shear, structural components subjected to torsion, design of rectangular beam section for torsion,
development length, continuation of reinforcement (beyond cutoff points)

UNIT-II (15HOURS)
LIMITSTATEDESIGNMETHOD–FLEXURE: Introduction, Limit States, Characteristic
values, characteristic strength, characteristic loads, design values for materials and loads,
factored loads. Limit State of Collapse (Flexure) Types of failures, assumptions for analysis and
design of singly reinforced, doubly reinforced sections, and flanged sections.

DESIGN OF SLABS: Design of one way slab, two way slabs.

UNIT-III (15HOURS)

LIMIT STATE OF COLLAPSE (COMPRESSION): Columns and their classification,

reinforcement in columns, assumptions, short and long (both tied and helical) columns subjected to
axial load, short columns subject to axial, uni-axial and biaxial bending.

FOUNDATIONS: Isolated footings

RETAINING WALLS: Stability criteria for retaining wall, Design of cantilever type retaining wall

Teaching-Learning Process
1. Assignments: Assignments are generally based on concepts covered in the class
and is directed towards developing reading and practicing habit amongst the
students. Knowledge of students can also be checked through multiple-choice based
questions.
2. Case Study: Students are exposed to a situation which is similar to a real life
situation. Students are required to gather more information so as to get insight
into the problem in order to solve the case.
3. Group Discussion: Group discussions prepare the students for job interviews.
Through group discussion, students learn to carry an idea, think critically in a
particular situation.
4. Presentation: Presentations not only increase the level of confidence in the
students but also enhance the analytic skills.
5. Project: Whenever a project is assigned to the students, they are expected to be
foresighted, think critically and through project students learn to handle and
evaluate the situation in hand.
6. Seminar: Seminar is generally a presentation by the students on certain topics
which may be predefined or may randomly be taken by the students. The seminar
helps in enhancing the knowledge, confidence and public speaking skills
7. Test: Knowledge of the students is tested through written test. They are assigned
different questions and are evaluated on the test.

Paper Setting Instructions

Please go through the following instructions thoroughly and follow the pattern while
setting the paper as the students have been prepared according to this format.

Maximum Marks = 60 Time: 3 Hours

The syllabus has been divided into three equal units. The paper setter is required to set ten
questions in all, three questions from each unit and a compulsory question consisting of five
sub-parts and based on the whole syllabus. The candidate will be required to attempt six
questions including the compulsory question number 1 and not more than two questions from
each unit

Weightage per unit = 20 marks (excluding over attempt weightage)

1. Question Paper will consist of ten questions.
2. Section A of question paper will be compulsory, containing five parts each of 2 marks
covering the whole syllabus (short answer type – total 10 marks)
3. Set three questions from each unit I, II and III. Students will attempt 5 questions selecting at not
more than two questions from sections B, C & D. Each question carries 10 marks. Questions of
Section B will be from unit I, Questions of Section C from unit II and Questions of section D from
unit III.
