CENTRIFUGE

INTRODUCTION
Centrifuge serves the purpose of removal
of moisture from the lubricating oil and is
located adjacent to Turbine Main oil tank.
The moisture present in the lubricating oil
will result in
 Poor lubrication.
 Corrosion in the oil system piping.
 Foaming in the lubricating oil system.

PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION

Centrifuge’s operation is based on the

principle that any particle under rotation will
experience a centrifugal force away from the
axis of rotation and it depends on the specific
gravity of the particle.

PURIFICATION:
Purification is the process, which divides
two immiscible liquids of different specific
gravities when subjected to high-speed
rotation.

CLARIFICATION:
Clarification is the process in which the
solid particles heavier than the liquid are
removed. When the liquid containing heavier
solid particles is subjected to high-speed
rotation, the solid particles experience a
greater centrifugal force and hence get
separated from the liquids.

DESCRIPTION
The main part of the centrifuge is the bowl
that has a cylindrical base. A vertical shaft
drives the bowl through a driving cone. In the
hub of the bowl, a distributor is mounted for
feeding the liquid to be separated. Numbers of
discs stacked on the distributor help for any
separation of liquids.
The liquid (unpurified oil) fed between the
bowl discs is divided by the centrifugal force
into a purified lighter liquid component (oil)
and a heavier liquid component (water). The
lighter liquid flows inwards along the top
surface of the discs. The separated heavier
liquid moves along the underside of the discs
outward to the sludge space in which most of
the heavier solid impurities are collected.
In order to avoid escaping of the lighter
liquid (oil) by passing through the outer edge
of the bowl, a liquid seal is established in the
sludge space. After attaining full speed of
rotation, small quantity of heavier liquid
(water) is admitted into the bowl that acts as
liquid seal.
A motor through a centrifugal clutch drives the
centrifuge. The horizontal shaft of the
centrifuge rotates a vertical shaft by means of
worm wheel. The centrifuge gears are splash
lubricated and a lub oil bath is provided for
this purpose.
A pump is provided on one end of the horizontal centrifuge shaft. The oil
delivered by the pump enters the heater section consisting of 3 heaters. The hot oil is then
sent the centrifuge bowl. The purified oil from the centrifuge is again sent to MOT. (Ref:
