A Paper Presented in Partial Fulfilment

Of the Requirements of
EDID 6508 – Developing Instructional Media
Semester III, 2019-2020

University: University of the West Indies Open Campus

Course Coordinator: Dr. Leroy Hill

Date: 26th November 2019

Introduction
Usability is one of the major factors that determines the successfulness of a website. It is

important therefore to have certain measurement methods to assess the usability of websites.

The methods could be used to help website designers make their websites more usable

(Chiew & Salim 2003).

Overview
Keshann Stewart owned the website that was evaluated. She is an Instructional Design

student who has used the required Weebly platform to display course activities and

assignments for EDID6508: Developing Instructional Materials. This website contain html

webpage, media artifacts, video and audio activities; collaboration tools; assignments and a

group project.

Schedule of Evaluation

1. View the overall appearance look and feel of the website was assessed. Were the

colours, font and graphics appropriate and effective for the target audience?

2. The pages were visited individually to assess the navigation and functionality of links.

The content was identified and reviewed to determine if it unfolded using a logical

sequence. Text content was examined, photo content was observed, audio content was
played and video content was viewed. The appropriateness, relevance, execution of

content design was assessed during this review.

3. Assessment of website accessibility was done during this review. Web pages were

viewed to check for audio options for those who are visually impaired, ALT tags on

images, magnifying capabilities, and links to external elements, which can assist with

viewing content.

4. The website was compared to the websites of previous cohorts to determine whether

the e-portfolio met course requirements or was above required standards.

Evaluation Results

Category Score Description

Content and 3 The layout and content of the site was very good. It was easy
to read and all needed information was present. The website
Layout was attractive and had a clear layout. Each section was well
organized and locatable.
Navigation 3 Links for navigation take the reader where s/he expects to go,
but some needed links seem to be missing. A user sometimes
gets lost.
Links (content) 4 All links were workable

Background and 4 Background colors, fonts were pleasing to the eyes, allowing
the user to read content with ease. They also do not detract
Color Choices from the content, and are consistent across pages.

Fonts 3 The fonts are consistent, easy to read and point size varies
appropriately for headings and text. Use of font styles (italic,
bold, underline) is used consistently and improves readability.
Graphics and 3 Graphics are related to the theme/purpose of the site, are
thoughtfully cropped, are of high quality and enhance reader
Images interest or understanding. All images, especially those that are
used for navigation, have an ALT tag that describes the image
(accessibility)
and its link so people who are visually impaired can use the
Web site well.
Copyright 3 Fair use guidelines are followed with clear, easy-to locate and
accurate citations for all borrowed material. No material is
included from Web sites that state that permission is required
unless permission has been obtained.
Spelling and 3 There are 1-3 errors in spelling, punctuation or grammar in the
final draft of the Web site.

Additional Comments and Recommendation

Overall, this website was good, it met the requirements of the standards set by peers
(members of previous and current cohorts) and the requirements for the course.

To improve, I would recommend the following:

1. Include all relevant copyright information from all borrowed sources (videos).

2. Improve accessibility.

3. Increase the font size of the main menu/links. They are the main access to the page, in my
view they need to be bold or at a good size font to be seen easily.
