EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS FOR ENGINEERING AND ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY

Generally, engineering and engineering technology profession have their own purposes and
attribute. Thus, these categories involve different training and naturally lead to different careers.
National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE) describes the difference between engineering
and engineering technology primarily differentiated from their differences in educational
programs. The Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) describes the
difference between engineering and engineering technology: “Engineering and technology are
separate, but intimately related professions.”

A. ENGINEERING
 Towards development of conceptual skills
 Consists of a sequence of engineering fundamentals and design courses
 Built on a foundation of complex mathematics and science courses.
 Provides graduates with broad knowledge that will exposed them to function of
designers
 Engineers spend more time on planning the design

B. ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY
 Oriented towards application
 Provide introductory to mathematics and science courses
 This courses generally have labs associated with the courses that require applied
or hands-on applications of the topics being studied.
 They often work by applying basic engineering principles and technical skills
 Provides graduates with knowledge to apply other’s design and make the plan
works
