Universal Design for Learning (UDL): This lesson allows students to use the recognition part of UDL as they
gather facts from the provided video and formulate their information. From the video they will find the
most important information and use it to fill in the notes tab on the board. This board is accessible on both
computers and tablets so student who have trouble with typing can easily speak type what they want to
write. Students who have hearing disabilities can also still do this project as the video comes with closed
captions. By using this technology tool, students are able to practice selecting important
information, applying it to their previous knowledge, and organizing it once they have found it to put it in an
understandable format.

Lesson idea implementation: For this lesson the students will be told to go through the board and watch a
video on George Washington. Before the video they will write down things that they notice and that they
wonder in order to spark conversation as a class. During and after the video they are expected to write
down important vocabulary words and facts that they notice. Once completing all activities on the board we
will come together as a class to discuss any questions and topics discussed in the video. The teacher will use
what the students notice and wonder to move along the conversation. This project will be the introductory
phase of learning about George Washington. It will take about 20 minutes and will give students an insight
as to who he was. Student Learning will be assessed during the discussion afterwards when we discuss what
they notice and wonder.
This can be differentiated for students as the video has subtitles for students hard of hearing. If a
student has a disability that causes them to struggle with typing they can easily write down what they want
to say or sit with a teacher as she/he writes it for them. In order to provide higher learning for those who
need an extension the students could take the information that they got from the activity and turn it in to a
PowerPoint that would help teach their fellow class mates. In order to conclude this lesson the students will
each state one new fact that they learned or got clarification on from the discussion they had as a whole
class.
Reflective Practice: After designing this lesson idea I feel that it could impact student learning by teaching
them how to have a collaborative discussion and also teach them how to look deeper into an informational
video. For those having an extension, they will be able to get practice with Microsoft PowerPoint
and turning their gathered information into a platform that is teachable to others.
