1860 Nov. 6 Abraham Lincoln is elected as United States president which was the primary catalyst of
the American Civil War
Henry Repeating Rifle; Benjamin Henry perfects the Henry rifle and was used in
considerable numbers by certain Union army units in the American Civil War
1861 Start of American Civil War between the North (the Union) and the South (the
Confederacy)
June 19 Birth of Jose Rizal (Philippine National Hero)
1863 Nov. 30 Birth of Andres Bonifacio (Founder of Katipunan)
1864 July 23 Birth of Apolinario Mabini (Brains of the Revolution)
1865 End of American Civil War; Robert E. Lee (Confederacy) surrenders to Ulysses S. Grant
(Union)
Assassination of Abraham Lincoln
University of Santo Tomas made the center for public instruction throughout the
Philippines by royal decree of Queen Isabella II of Spain
1869 Nov. 17 Suez Canal opened; easier to travel from Philippines to Europe which included the travel
of the illustrados.
1871 The young physicians or pharmacists may study at the Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy
of the University of Santo Tomas which was considered as the first school of Medicine and
Pharmacy in the Philippines. Only Spaniards, mestizos and wealthy Filipinos were
admitted.
1872 Cavite Munity. The Filipino native priests - Gomez, Burgos, and Zamora - are publicly
executed by the Spanish for alleged participation in the mutiny of 200 Filipino soldiers in
Cavite. The deaths of the three Filipino priests, who had actively campaigned for the
rights of native clergy. This awakens a powerful sense of nationalist consciousness among
Filipinos.
1875 June 25 The colonial Ferrocaril. King Alfonso's decree required Inspector of Public Works of the
Philippine Islands to submit a railway system plan for Luzon. This first suspicion of an
evolving Filipino nationalism coincided more or less with the very first important
geographic linking of small trading points in Luzon.
Nov. 14 Gregorio Del Pilar, one of the youngest generals in the revolution was born in Bulacan.
Dec. 15 Emilio Jacinto, the "Brain of Katipunan" was born in Tondo, Manila.
1880 Wealthy people started to send their sons to Europe to study. Out of this talented group
of overseas Filipino students started to arise what came to be known as the Propaganda
Movement. Magazines, poetry, and pamphleteering flourished.
1882 Marcelo H. Del Pilar founded the Diariong Tagalog, the first daily published in the Tagalog
text, where he publicly denounced Spanish maladministration of the Philippines. His
attacks were mostly directed against the friars whom he considered to be mainly
responsible for the oppression of the Filipinos.
