LIGHT-FIDELITY

WHAT IS LI-FI ?
 Li-Fi (short for light fidelity) is wireless
communication technology, which utilizes light to
transmit data and position between devices.
 The term was first introduced by Harald
Haas of University of Edinburgh.
 In this LED bulbs are outfitted with
a chip that modulates the light
imperceptibly for optical data
transmission.
WORKING PRINCIPLE
 In a basic setup, it consists of a light bulb (LED ) which is used as a
emitter and a photodiode used as a receiver. The LED bulb is specifically
built for the purpose so that it can be used for high speed transmission.
 The Emitter (LED Bulb) word by switching ON/OFF at an extremely high
rate. The ON position indicates binary 1 and the OFF position
indicated binary 0. Now the interesting part is, digital data is
constituted with just these binary values and thus data can be
transmitted by just turning the bulb ON/OFF.
 The photodetector/photodiode is used to sense these changes in state of
LED and interpret the data received which is then transmitted further.
WORKING PRINCIPLE
WHY VLC?
 Visible light communication uses visible light between
400-800 THz of bandwidth for data transmission.
 This is much larger than radio waves.

 It is also harmless compared to other electromagnetic

waves.
PROGRESS
 In 2011 Prof. Hass demonstrated a prototype in a
TED event in Edinburgh.
 In 2017 a startup named PureLIFI developed a
trans-receiver for li-fi.
 IN Aug 2019 Orkney 5G tested LI-FI data
transmission via solar panels.
NEED FOR LI-
FI
 Normal base station transmit signals with an
efficiency of 5% only and the rest of the energy
is used in cooling the system.
 We also have more than 5 billion devices
connected to the internet and which trnsmitt
more than 600 TB of data every month.
 Currently the WI-FI has 1.4 GHz of bandwidth
which is insufficient for new devices coming in
the market.
WHY NOT LI-
FI…
 Efficient and Fast
LED bulb used in LiFi has an efficiency of 90% as well as they consume
less power.
It is estimated that we can transmit signal upto the speed of 10 Gbps.

 Reduce network conjugation

With the advancement of Li-Fi we will be able to use a network bandwidth
of 400-800 THz.
 Secure
Li-Fi is more secure and offers additional privacy because light is blocked
by the walls and hence provides more secure data transfer.
FIELD OF APPLICATION IN
FUTURE
Free Li-Fi zones in community hubs
Local Internet access becomes easier with LiFi. Street lights
with LiFi capability could become hotspots. People walking
down the street could easily access the Internet on their
phones.
INTERNET OF THINGS
Due to its impressive speeds, Li-Fi could make a huge impact
on the internet of things. With data being transferred at a
much higher level, even more internet-enabled devices will be
able to connect to one another.
Underwater Communication
Light can travel through water
unlike Wi-Fi’s radio signals that
will be swallowed up by the water.
This could change the way
underwater vehicles communicate
with one another.
Car-to-car Communication

Car headlights and rear lights

could be fitted with Li-Fi
enabled LED lightbulbs,
which in turn could lead
to car-to-car communication.

LiFi also has uses in traffic and

transportation. For instance,
the LED bulbs in traffic lights
can be used to give traffic and
weather updates to drivers
while they wait at a red light.
FUNDING IN R&D
 $ 6 Billion has been invested in research and
development of Li-Fi technology in 2018.

 There are several companies working on this

technology few of them are listed below.
