CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Church is a building where Christians go to worship (Oxford University

Press, 2019). This is a building used for worshipping and other religious
activities (Wikipedia, 2019). Church buildings have been a cornerstone of
Christian faith since the beginning, however, their size and construction have
changed over the years. As the church grew, the need for larger buildings that
were designed specifically for the purpose of worship became obvious. In
some cases, existing homes were remodelled to suit such purposes and in
others, new buildings were constructed. The design of the church building
itself is purposeful, incorporating symbolic meaning from the Bible. (M.
Maynard, 2018) In addition, a church could also support an establishment that
would be subjected to their religious view. It is an organization of officers,
teachers, and pupils for purposes of moral and religious education under the
supervision of a local church. (Merriam-Webster Inc., 2019)

On the other hand, school is an institutional building that offers

instruction and education. (Merriam-Webster Incorporated, 2019) It is
designed for learning spaces and learning environments for the teaching of
pupils under the direction of teachers. (Wikipedia, 2019)

1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Worship spaces are designed to inspire a spirit of relevance and

worship. The spirit of man is inspired to share deeper reflections of a higher
deity when the spaces in which the worship is undertaken are to design to
inspire such reverence.

In this regards, worshipping place is necessary to have a uniform goal

in terms of building and designing, to build an attractive and functional facility
that is pleasing for everyone to occupy and use.(Schrag, Smith, and
Stollenwerk, 2007). The church of the future and indeed that of today must be
designed in the contemporary idiom. Moreover, he adds that if thesis building
are to be focal point of a community, they must be of architectural value to the
community. The contemporary architecture can be considered to be the
architecture of the present day. It's typical to classify different sorts of
architecture into different architectural "movements." It's an overarching
ideology concerned with architecture that reflects the opinions and values of
the present and aims to break away from the past. This means that

1
contemporary architects have, as their guiding principle, the desire to create
architecture that breaks with past traditions, styles and standards. Rather than
any one value, contemporary architecture is about innovation. (Edwards,
2018) In addition, religion has its subgroup that operates under a common
name, tradition, and identity is called religious denomination. It refers the
different Christian denomination as well as various subdivisions such as sub-
sector, schools, and religious movement. It is also used to describe the
branches of Judaism, Islam and multi- denominational.

Meanwhile, due to uprising of demand for schools that feature high-

performance design and technologies to enhance learning, support
community use, and function well during natural and manmade disasters. At
the same time, resources for school planning, design, construction, and
operation are controlled. The challenge is to build high quality schools
efficiently. Community shared spaces and life-cycle cost analysis are two
ways that designers are meeting this challenge. More than other building
types, school facilities have a profound impact on their occupants and the
functions of the building, namely teaching and learning. Children in various
stages of development are stimulated by light, color, the scale of their
surroundings, even the navigational aspects of their school. Children can also
react negatively to contrary conditions. (Vaughan, 2017) Most countries have
systems of formal education, which is commonly compulsory. In these
systems, students’ progress through a series of schools. The names for these
schools vary by country but generally include primary school for young
children and secondary school for teenagers who have completed primary
education. An institution where higher education is taught, is commonly called
a university college or university, but these higher education institutions are
usually not compulsory. (Wikipedia, 2019)

The Philippines is a religious and devoted country. Majority of the

religion in the Philippines is Roman Catholic Christianity, followed by an Islam
and other Christian minority (Diana, 2018). Aside from having religion as an
instrument of communication with God, it has consider education to provide
more religious practices incorporated on the curriculum. Protestant Christian
in the Philippines makes up nearly 11% of the Filipino population. It arrived
during late 19th century when American missionaries began to arrive in the
country. They include a wide variety of Pentecostal, evangelical and
independent churches. Some denominations were founded locally by
indigenous people. (Wikipedia, 2019) Along with the Pentecostal independent

2
churches, Jesus Is Alive Community was founded in the year 1975 in Quezon
city, Philippines.

Education in the Philippines initiated the extension of the country’s

basic education cycle from ten to twelve years. With emerging issues of
declining educational standards in the Philippine education system during the
first decade of the 21st century. A UNESCO mid-decade assessment report of
Southeast Asian education systems, published in 2008, for example, found
that participation and achievement rates in basic education in the Philippines
had fallen dramatically, owed to chronic underfunding. The enrolment rates
was dropped down at elementary level had regressed back to levels last seen
in the late 1990s. (Macha, Mackie and Magaziner, 2018)

The first Jesus Is Alive Community church was immerge because of

the two founders of JIA. Through the years, Jesus Is Alive Community spread
throughout the Philippines and other counties such as Canada, Dubai, Qatar
and Bahrain. (Jesusisalivecommunity.org, 2019) In 1980 God instructed the
elder of the Jesus Is Alive Community Inc. to establish a Christian school that
will provide quality education at the same time build lives based on the
knowledge of the truth that is the word of God. In the year 1984, the New
Jerusalem School was established. It is recognized by DepEd as Christian
school. (Newjerusalemschool, 2019)

Today, in Bulan Sorsogon, Jesus is Alive Forevermore Church (JIAFC)

and New Jerusalem School (NJS) as a main worship building and place to be
educated and to nurture the spiritual being. Furthermore, it corresponds to
other activities like meetings, practice, seminars, church parties, and as room
for teaching and learning. Through the years, the growth of members of the
church is growing and will multiply every year. Also the church building is old
enough and can no longer accommodate large number of Church members.
The church facilities are no longer sufficient to meet their needs. On the other
hand, due to the increase in number of enrolees every year is likely to
happen. Also most of the classrooms are old enough due to several typhoons
and other calamities that the school has encountered. Consequently, the
school facilities are no longer satisfactory to meet their needs.

With the help of JIA-Bulan Pastors, this study came with the idea of
proposing the Jesus Is Alive Forevermore Church and New Jerusalem School
that is typhoon resilient, eco-friendly and may sustain the demands of school
and church facilities and amenities.

1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The growth of membership in Jesus is Alive Forevermore Church and

the increase of enrolees every year in the New Jerusalem School in Bulan,
Sorsogon, and the Elders has given the idea to develop a new JIAFC and
NJS trough certain measures that can accommodate large number of church
members and school enrolees. Thus, this is idea made the researcher to
propose Jesus Is Alive Forevermore Church and New Jerusalem School.

problems to achieve the best outcome for the project:

1. What is the present status of Jesus Is Alive Forevermore Church and

New Jerusalem School in Bulan, Sorsogon in terms of facilities and
amenities?
2. What are the facilities and amenities needed to consider in the
development of a new Jesus Is Alive Forevermore Church and New
Jerusalem School?
3. What are the design consideration, DepEd standards, laws and
ordinances that may have impact to the proposed project?
4. What would be the appropriate design solution for the proposed Jesus
Is Alive Forevermore Church and New Jerusalem School?

1.3 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The proposed Jesus Is Alive Church and New Jerusalem School aimed
to provide organized and functional spaces in the new JIAFC and NJS that
might sustain major demands of the community. This might bear significance
to the following:
