Project Narrative

The students in my classroom will be exploring the question “how can we, as

photojournalists, tell the stories of our community and its people?” They will explore this using

the ten days that we have set up for them in order to research and find answers to this question.

Students will explore their community through research and interviews in order to create a photo

essay that answers this question with a group of their peers. This project gives students a learning

opportunity to research the culture and social stories within their communities and create an

essay that visually stimulate their audience and bring awareness of the community around them.

Students will use research, collaboration, speaking and listening, writing, and technological skills

in order to properly complete this project to its full potential. Students will hit social studies and

English literature sixth grade standards throughout this ten-day project that speak to the skills

listed. Students will need to use 21st century skills in order for this project to be relevant within

the classroom walls and outside of them in the real world. They will be engaging in a lot of

collaboration, communication, research, and critical thinking individually and among peers for

this project to be completed. All of the students will participate in activities that will meet the

technology standard ISTE 6 A-D, creative communication through technology and varied forms

along with 3 A-C, knowledge construction. The class will engage in a variety of activities from

research, gallery walks, essay writing, and a full technological presentation within their groups

over the course of the project. Groups will be given to students by the instructor in order to

ensure work is evenly distributed among four students per group. Students will be able to

determine their own themes for their project in their groups to explore within their communities

as to maintain a student driven outcome. They will use several technological tools such as google

docs, Storyboard That, and a presentation tool of their choice. This project is centered around the
communities and people that these students interact with daily and should provide a relevant

topic to ensure student engagement. By completing this project students will have a lasting

impact in the community after presenting their final product in the community event. As this is a

digital project, members of the community will witness the final product. The goal of this project

is to encourage others to research their own communities to have a deeper connection to where

they call home and those who live there.
