Stanley Kubrick once said, “if it can be written or thought, it can be filmed.

” For me, this

statement could not be more accurate, I believe that film is a total expression of one’s
thoughts, and because it is the only platform that can really achieve this in a visual manner,
it is thus the most creative and most beautiful thing I can think of. I believe filmmaking is the
best tool an artist can have to show the world how they think and feel, as it’s narrative,
visuals and audio provides a lot more depth to someone’s mentality than words could ever
describe. Not only this, I adore how there are no right or wrong answers to film. Film
provides the artist the complete freedom and control to decide what he wants his message
to be, however the fact the audience can have different interpretations of this message
shows how powerful and interesting the film industry is. Despite not having an artistic
upbringing, I was able to nurture my passion and respect for this field through witnessing
first-hand the impact film had on a community; I was aware that people usually go to the
cinemas for a day out and mostly everyone consumes something media related on a daily
basis. Film and media are omnipresent and can arguably be considered the most powerful
factor of our lifetime, which is why I want to grasp the opportunity to be a filmmaker with
both hands. Whether it’s a small gif on the internet, or a blockbuster film, no one can deny
moving image is fascinating and deserves appreciation.

I want to apply for this filmmaking course because I believe it has everything I would like in
order to increase my knowledge and skills and pursue my goals of making my work at a
professional standard. I want to be the best I can be, and I feel like this is an ideal route to
take as it is hands-on, which, in my opinion, is the most effective way to learn.
I have been studying film and media production academically, receiving praise for my
artistic and practical capabilities, I have been awarded certificates throughout this timeline,
highlighting my dedication, attendance and quality of work; I also got a ‘D*’ for media in
GCSE and a ‘D’ in my first year of BTEC L3 Creative Media Production. On top of this, I am a
part of the mental health campaign ‘We Will’, in which we aim to improve mental health
resources for young people, mainly reaching an audience through film making. I have made
two films ‘Boy’ and ‘Listen’ in this campaign (both of which I gave to the Duke and Duchess
of Cambridge and ministers in Parliament which have been nominated for the Osprey
Awards and has made me win a West Cumbria Community Hero award, a Golden Apple
award and a Diana Award - the most prestigious accolade a young person can achieve for
their social work. Furthermore, I have appeared on many media products such as BBC Look
North; Radio 5 Live Breakfast Show; Border TV twice; CFM; BBC Cumbria; the TES; the
Guardian Newspaper for a full page article, German TV and an American and Italian
online newspaper, managing to get a further insight into the on-goings behind the
scenes, therefore I have a further understanding of how these things are structured,
roles and responsibilities, credits and the value of teamwork and contribution.
Moreover, I have developed skills such as discussion, pitching and drive by taking
opportunities such as student council, chairing formal and informal meetings, and being
a community volunteer since 2014. To summarise, I have had lots of experience in
moving image productions and have achieved skills to support my involvement from
volunteering, my college course and extra-curricular activities.
