Field Experience Reflection Paper

I did my 16 hour observation at Akins Elementary school. My grade level was

kindergarten and the name of my teacher was Mrs.Sulsar. There are many things that I

learned during this observation as a future teacher. I learned that being a teacher is

definitely what I make of it. I have to do what is best for the students in the classroom.

Every student does not learn the same , and also some students are very much so ahead of

others , and you still have to keep everyone of them equal. For example, in the classroom

I was in 4-5 students get taken out multiple times a day to get help with things such as ,

sight words, numbers , reading and letters. This is done in a way that the other students

do not know what is going on that they are even gone. When the students come back

,they resume whatever activity is being done at the time.

Another thing I learned is that I have to let students have a voice and a choice. Mrs.

Sulsar has assigned jobs she gives different students everyday. These include line leader ,

kaboose, trash in the classroom , lights and holding the door. I believe this teachers the

kids responsibility and accountability. She also does stations everyday which include

playing with toys , ipad , reading , worksheet, and computers. She asks each student what

station they would like to go to individually. As a teacher I have to come in with a

positive attitude and great energy because kids feed off that. I liked how there was a set

schedule everyday , and how she assigned students to have different jobs everyday. I also

enjoyed how she would test them daily on their knowledge of sight words , cvc words ,

numbers 1-60 and their reading.

Being able to observe Mrs. Sulsar was an amazing experience, I can tell she loves her

job. She has been teaching for 10+ years and first taught at a sunday school , which

inspired her to teach younger kids and give them a positive influence. And yes I would

still love to be a teacher. I have seen nothing but positive interaction between the

Mrs.Sulsar and her students. Even when some had got in trouble for not following the

rules she would ask them what they were doing wrong and how they would fix it, she did

not yell or even slightly raise her voice, they would respond in a respectful manner.

I believe Mrs.Sulsar has progressivism and a little bit of essentialism. She observes best

how her students will learn best whether it is visual or hands on. For example they were

learning about different animals , so as a field trip they went to the zoo. Another example

is all of the students having to be at mastery level , so being tested on the same material

that the district everyday. The lessons were both teacher and student centered. The

teacher side of it was the center lesson the district gave her to teach and the student

centered side of it was the teacher finding a fun activity to implement it while still

learning. For example a turkey coloring number cut out worksheet.

Moreover my teaching observation was wonderful. I have gained so much knowledge

with only 16 hours. What I would implement into my classroom in the future is , having

the students have jobs everyday. Making my classroom very inviting with a theme such a

finding nemo or baby shark, and it would be very colorful. And also having the teaching

style of progressivism.
