Creative Writing Course Outline

40 minutes – 2x/week
Ms. Johnson

OUTCOMES:

❖ The aim of this option course is to introduce young minds to the endless possibilities of creative
writing. Students will appreciate the diversity of writing, explore their imaginations, and create
their very own creative writing portfolio.

COURSE CONTENT:

❖ Our weeks together will be split into two categories

1) Writing Days
2) Portfolio Days
❖ Writing days will consist of students responding to pre-selected prompts. Guidelines for each
written work will be presented to students. It is required that students use their time efficiently
and do their best work possible.
❖ Portfolio days will consist of students working on their “final draft” of their written work from
the previous day. Students will be given a “good copy” portfolio page (cardstock) that they will
need to decorate and write out their finished written piece. At the end of the course all of these
portfolio pages will be compiled and bound together!

EVALUATION:

❖ FINAL PORTFOLIO = 90%

▪ Must have title page
▪ Must have specified number of written pieces
▪ Must be polished and neat
❖ PARTICIPATION = 10%
▪ 1-on-1 conferences
▪ Sharing work
▪ Exit slips
▪ Completed checklist

MATERIALS:

❖ Pencils + loose leaf paper for writing

❖ Pencil crayons, markers, pens, etc. for portfolio pages

DISCLAIMER:

❖ You must use your time effectively and efficiently in order to successfully finish this option
course. There should not be any homework for this class, but that is up to you! If you do not use
your time well, you will find yourself falling behind.
