EXPERIMENT NO 5

To Determine the thermal Emissivity of a given

Specimen by Thermal Radiation Unit
Objective;
The objective of this experiment is to find the emissivity of given specimen by using emissivity
apparatus.

Apparatus used;
The apparatus used in this experiment is the emissivity apparatus.

apparatus Description
This apparatus consists of following parts,
SOURCE: This is the specimen material, placed in its cabin and being heated up to the required
level of temperature by a heater. The heater is being controlled by a thermostat
RADIATION SHAPE FACTOR(F): Used for to allow a concentrated beam of thermal rays
of from source to the radio meter. They may of different shapes while here the one used is a
conical truncated one
RADIOMETER: This is a device which takes and emits radiations. There are three plates with
holes inside with the diameter of the hole constantly decreasing from inlet to exit. This is for the
beam to strike in a concentrated manner the thermocouple. Thermocouple sense the radiations and
gives measures of temperature at the end of radiometer

Apparatus figure;
Experimental procedure,
Following steps will be followed to find out he emissivity of the apparatus.
1. Set the reference temperature value from the knob and allow the apparatus to achieve
steady state.
2. When the steady state is achieved turn the knob of the dial at 1 and note the reading in
millivolt and convert it to corresponding temperature.
3. Now turn it to 2 and note the reading again in millivolt and convert it to the corresponding
temperature.
4. Now turn the knob to R and note the radiometer reading of radiometer in millivolt
5. Now using the formulae of emissivity find out the value of emissivity.

Observations and calculations;

Reading of display dial for body 1=

Reading of display dial for body 2 =
𝑅2
Shape factor = F21= 𝑅2 +𝐿2 =

The reading of heater i.e. T1 = 473

The reading of element is T2 = 283
1 𝑇 4 2 𝑇 4
As the emissivity of the apparatus is given by Q = εAσ (100 − 100)

Since Q = CEm

Now emissivity of the apparatus is given by

CEm
ε=
𝑇1 4 𝑇2 4
𝐹21 Aσ (100 − 100 )
