Week 1 This week was spent on idea generation

What have you been asked to

Why have you chosen this target

For this unit (be creative) I was asked to creative 2
productions of my choice out of the following : short
film, animation or a music video, I decided to choose
a short film and a music video as these ae the two I
would probably be most successful in producing and
also I have had experience in producing these
before. We had to also choose a target audience 5-
12 or 25-40 I chose 25-40. From that we were asked to
brainstorm ideas and then send out surveys to find out
which idea people liked the most.
I chose this target audience because I feel like it
would be easier to create hard hitting and powerful
productions, I like to get a message across with
meaning and I feel like creating content for that
target audience would be more effective in terms of
the things I like to create vs creating a production for
9-12 year olds
I had to think about how I was going to try include
everyone within my target audience as 25-40 is a
rather big gap. I decided that ifi could find an old
song preferably from the 80's or 90's that I would put a
more modern twist for the people in my target
audience towards the beginning of the spectrum, in
the end I chose wicked games remix. it was important
that I created a good narrative something that could
have some relation to movies or other music videos
that have been produced by other artists in the past.
my idea reflected the 80's film ghost, I wanted to take
a couple and have the women pass away and show
how the other person essentially copes without the
other half of them, to make it more bright I want to
have the woman appear as if she's real and show him
that life with or without her can still be good by taking
him on an adventure like the old days, and proving
that she is wherever he is. Whilst the idea may seem

What did you find out about your

secondary research?
more modern I will still be able to include and take
into account the factors about what my target
audience enjoy and incorporate it within my
production which I will find out from my target
audience research.
my second idea which is for my short film was a lot
harder to think of, obviously I really want each
production I create to be the best of my ability, after
thinking about the types of things that would appeal
to my target audience I decided to something slightly
dark with a powerful meaning. I decided on doing a
short film about a broken down marriage which is
toxic. This fits perfectly with my target audience as
within this age many people are settling down or are
married and many people go through this and are
afraid to speak out. even though I am not allowed to
use dialogue I was thinking on using dance as my
expression so show the emotion and meaning
towards the end of my short film. Camerawork will be
really important in this to create and tell the story
effectively as I want it to be however it will allow me
to be creative and put my techniques to use. At the
end of my short film I want it to essentially be "the last
dance," where she finally breaks free of her husband’s
abuse and essentially leaves him and finds help. I feel
like with the right planning and research this could be
really effective.
I did a survey rather than a focus group to find out
what ideas were the most effective and the things
they liked about them etc., as it was a way of
understanding people’s opinions which will help me to
improve.

This week was spent researching target audiences
Firstly I had to find out the sorts of things that my target
audience were in to and the sorts of things that they
like, therefore i decided to look up things that they
were interested in. for example I found out that they
were, millennials, wine drinkers, the majority have jobs
that are based in offices, they’re active, like listening

Week 3
What genres have you chosen
and why?
to the radio and significantly like watching dramas on
TV.
By learning about what my target audience likes it’ll
help me understand and try incorporating the things
that they want or would like to see for example I like t
create messages that are powerful and have
meaning, the genre my short film comes under is a
drama which was a finding from my research. I can
take inspiration from this and help this to start creating
a vision for my two productions.
It was pretty useful getting a face to face interview
with people who are in my target audience as then I
am getting an insight hands on about the things they
want to see, the things they like about my idea or
perhaps the things I should adapt and change, it was
also good because they’re able to give me feedback
for only my productions and not just as a whole.
It was very difficult to get a large response on my
surveys because I’m only 17 therefore my following’s I
have on social media are all my age or between 15-
20. Maybe to improve my number of respondents I
should send a survey to someone to post online who
knows or could get people within that age range to
answer my survey
A lot of things make my target audience different to
5-12 ear olds. When I mae productions I usually aim it
between 16-20 maybe slightly higher therefore I knew
that I could create the same effect and ideas with my
target audience now. It also allows me to be more
creative with things and also my idea to begin within
as they are usually things that 5-12 year olds can’t
relate to. The key things I need to be looking at when
creating my productions are things like genre and my
conventions, the colours and lighting sound, making
sure that my target audience aren’t bored but
engaged throughout my production.

The genre for my short film is drama. I wanted to
create something that fit my target audience, I had
to conduct research in order to understand what

Week 4
What have you learnt from you
primary research this week?
watch tv or a lot of soaps. Majority of soaps on tv
happen to be dramas a well which helped with my
idea development. I also don’t like creating things
that are really stereotypical and generic, I like
creating things that have meaning and an important
message therefore this is why chose drama as my
genre the genre for my music video is a romance, this
is something that the majority of my target audience
can relate to, it seems cheesy and generic but I need
something that is relatable to my target audience, Its
also abou the loss of a lover therefore its not a normal
falling in love style music video.
I haven’t done all of my research yet as I have been
absent in lessons which means that I’ve had to catch
up in my free time but conducing my codes and
conventions research has been helpful as its been
allowing my to create a vision for the things I want to
include in both my productions. It will also help me
during the creation of my production phase as I can
practice and learn new skills.
This will influence me as ive been able to see the
things I like and that work for my target audience to
make it them effective productions. This will also help
me to start visualising and developing my ideas into
real productions
Key conventions for my music video genre are things
like colour grading black and white edits, subtle
romantic vibes between actors. Also for my genre for
my short film is drama therefore using cinematic style
shots to capture the dramaand colour esepically like
blue harsh cold tones and hues to emphasise the dull
depressing emotions.

my two productions, being able to research has been
allowing me to widen my knowledge on maybe

knowledge it will help me massively for when I go to
do my FMP also as I could be creating a project for
example a music video and by doing this research
now it will also help me and make things easier further
in the future.
Codes and convention research will help me to
develop my production for when I start to do my
planning. For example when it comes to coming up
with my script my codes and convention research will
come in handy as I will be scripting and incorporating
what I’ve learnt and researched to hopefully create a
successful production.
Processing the research allowed me to get a better
understanding what was needed in order to create
something that will benefit my target audience in my
productions, by analysing my results I am able to take
the things I need and when it comes to planning
weeks I will know what I am trying to create.
There are a few things I need to make sure that I stay
on top of and also feedback.
There’s some previous research that I need to make
sure that i either complete or make better.
This week was spent planning your productions
Planning this week has helped me organise and figure
out the things for my filming and editing weeks. I had
to start thinking about the types of locations that I
wanted to film in and also start coming up with a
script, I feel like this was the hard part as I had to try
envision how I wanted my short film to be set out and
the types of shots I wanted to incorporate into it,
making sure I was trying to think about it as effectively
as possible. Although that some of these shots or the
order will change mapping out this so I could start
drawing up my storyboards and carry on with the rest
of the planning.
This will be useful for my production as then I have
plans which I can follow which will help my filming
and editing go more smoothly for me and also will
help when and if my actors cancel or something will
go wrong, I will be able to easily communicate with
them and figure out what time is best on my schedule
as well as there’s.
Issues I have been encountering are such things like
finding my actors I always find this bit particularly hard
as scouting for people who have the time but also
want to be in your production is not always simple.

Week 6
How did you find the filming
process?
You also don’t want to keep using people you’ve
already previously casted in your productions as it
seems unprofessional, another problem is using
people in your class, and even though this is the
easiest options and you could probably find someone
who would feature in it again seems unprofessional.
Other problems have been locations, especially have
you have a vision and you want to try and create it
for example for my short film I wanted to use an
abandoned building but finding somewhere that it is
legal but also don’t ask for certain fee’s is hard to find.
Outside lessons I have been doing small things like
finishing off parts or adding in things into my script, I
have also been adding parts to my storyboard.
I am pretty much ready to film for both of my
productions, I need to make sure that I have
everything planned and organised as I could have
some issues that could possibly come up when it’s
time to film for example actors suddenly cancelling,
as it is a frequent thing that it could happen or
weather could be a problem which means I would
need to re-schedule days for filming, so making sure
I’m 110% prepared for the next 6 weeks to come.
I haven’t completely finished my storyboards to I need
to make sure that they’re all completed in time for
filming.
This week was spent filming
I had planned to film during the half term for both my
music video and short film, I filmed my music video
and everything was fine, I also looked back at shots
during the filming process however, after I put my SD
card into the laptop to review the footage again it
said there were no files above like 10kb which meant
that the files wouldn’t open because it was if nothing
was ever filmed because they were too small. This
means now that I have to re film at some point. For
my short film I haven’t filmed yet although my plan

Week 7
How did you find the filming
process?
was to film during half term I ended up not being able
to film because the actors I was supposed to use
failed me hugely, I had been messaging was really
nice and we planned everything and then he just
never replied to any messages confirming stuff for half
term therefore it meant I had to come up with new
actors.
Because of these problems it means that I now I have
to find new actors for my short film which has proven
harder than it is as it took me a while to find actors to
begin with. I also need to find new locations as since
checking for locations I says that the place is currently
under construction which means that I can’t film there
considering it is a huge hazard to actors. For my music
video need to now re film however, I have someone
trying to help me figure out actors and locations
again.
My music video needs reshooting because of the
problems I encountered which I previously talked
about therefore I am currently in the process of
getting dates ready and actors etc.
In my previous units I mainly focused on learning to
edit better rather than the camerawork side of things I
don’t feel like I have a lot to say for the things I’ve
incorporated just mainly the simple things like tracking
shots close ups wide shots etc.
The locations I initially wanted to film at for my short
film were out the window due to reconstruction of the
building that I didn’t know about which automatically
meant that it was too dangerous to film there,
therefore for my short film I am having to film in a
dance studio, obviously this doesn’t fit the theme,
however, I can maybe try use props to make it look
more like a house or somewhere run down.
I am currently not keeping up with my schedule this is
because of the problems I’ve been faced with.
My music video needs capturing and my short film is
being filmed this Monday coming.
This week was spent filming
I thought that the filming process went okay, I tried
using a gimbal for the first time without any practice
for my short film therefore things were a bit tricky,
some shots I tried to capture I didn’t get because of
the movement of the gimbal, so I also filmed without
the gimbal too and multiple times to capture multiple
shots.

Week 8

process this week?

There were no major issues, my dancers hadn’t had
time previously during the week to rehearse and
come up with a dance for my short film as they were
busy therefore on the day they had to learn and
choreograph an entire dance which they did
amazingly well although it only left me 40 minutes to
film the entire short film, however, we managed to get
enough within that time. I also filmed my music video
this week and am having to re film the weekend
before my editing week the shots didn’t come out
nicely in the location therefore I am reshooting.
I am pretty happy with what I filmed I feel like when I
edit that I will be able to piece things together and
make my shots look effective, some shots are blurry,
and some go in and out of shot because of the
gimbal but I filmed twice in order to gather more
footage. The footage for my music video which I re
filmed for the 3rd time came out really nicely and I
think it’s going to work really well
Most of the techniques I looked at for my short film
were things like colour grading and editing
techniques however I tried experimenting using a
gimbal and creating smoother more cinematic shots
which was quite difficult to use especially when they
were dancing, for my music video I also used the
perspective view type shot and a more home style
video shots to create that nostalgia effect.
This week was spent editing
The editing process for me is the best part however it
can be hugely frustrating. I have mixed emotions
about editing two productions and having them up in
time, this process is being slower than I thought
especially because I am a perfectionist
I haven’t had any major issues whilst editing just
having slow computers or I was editing on someone’s
MacBook and they had 2020 software whereas the
college computers are 2019 which meant I couldn’t
open any of my work however someone was kind
enough to lend me their MacBook which had the
correct software which meant I was able to upload
and finish my short film.
Colour grading is something I have some experience
in from my previous fmp, I used colour grading in both
my productions, mainly in my short film because when
I filmed it was in a really warm horrible yellow light

Filming
This week was spent editing
This week I have found the editing process stressful, I
still am having to finish parts of my short film and I still
need to export I and I also need to edit my music
video, we found out that both our productions have
to be reading for our pitches Wednesday and this
Thursday so we can send out surveys to get responses
therefore I am under pressure to be able to get work
done
I haven’t encountered any problems editing, the
computer I am using is slow but there is nothing I can
do about it I just have to be patient.
I am happy with the outcome of my short film, I didn’t
have much time to film and get everything done but
after editing and really trying to make it work I think
that actually I looks pretty good and I’m pretty proud
of myself especially because I like everything being
perfect, I think the colour grading looked really good
in the end and I even put black bars to create a more
dramatic and cinematic effect.
I think that my production especially my short film
mainly met my target audience because I had able
to listen to what they wanted for example colour I
colour graded in order to reach the dramatic effect I
was aiming for, they wanted a drama therefore I
created or tried to create an impacting drama, for
my music video I used my editing skills to be able to
bring a nostalgic atmosphere to my music video
which my target audience can relate to and
something they can smile to
My idea for my music video fell through a lot, I was so
stressed out about getting my short film right that
when it came to my music video I knew that what I
was trying to create was too much for the time I had, I
still feel like my target audience can relate to the
video however my idea in the beginning was a
thought out process to create something relatable for
my audience.

How did you choose to pitch your
idea?
What made your pitch stand out
and be different? Why would it
convince someone to invest?
I feel like I taken qualities from each of my odes and
conventions research and used them in each of my
productions, I feel like if I had more time and wasn’t so
under pressure I could have really used all of the
conventions I researched however, I can still say I
have used parts for each.
I feel like these two productions have actually come
out well or better than I thought, I definitely struggled
with time and encountered problems but overall, I
think that I did pretty well in terms of the way they
look.
I think that I definitely could have done better
producing my music video whilst its visually good the
context lets it down massively in my eyes as my
original idea was a lot different to what was created
at the end which I have explained in parts of my
weekly blogs, for next time I will definitely have to use
time wisely and really to stay on board with
everything.
I’ve learnt that time keeping isn’t my best attribute
and also being a perfectionist I have a habit of
wanting everything to be perfect even though in
terms of time to actually produce two productions
and on your own is a challenge therefore I feel like I
do stress myself out a lot, going into my fmp I need to
remember to breathe and just take one step at a time
and trust myself a bit more and also improve time
keeping skills
I have a few things to upload and finish like
soundscapes because I missed that lesson I also need
to finish editing my music video and then I will be
pitching next week.
This week you pitched
I chose to pitch my idea using a PowerPoint, I pieced
together s some of my research for it and used
pictures to create something that was engaging other
than just words
I didn’t use notes, I chose not to use notes and just
stand up and talk about everything I had done or had
been doing. I felt more confident just standing up and
going for it rather than worrying about the people in

confidence is always key.
I think the pitch went as well as it could go, I could
have added some things, but my pitch was long
enough, and I said the main parts
