Background:

The Training and Education Centre, ICAR- Indian Veterinary Research


Institute, Shivajinagar, Pune, which was established about 3 years ago, has in
recent days organized several specialised training programmes such as Surgery
and Imaging, Climate Resilient Livestock Farming, Cell Culture and
Entrepreneurship Development etc. in collaboration with the State Animal
Husbandry Department, KNP College of Veterinary Sciences, Shirwal and
National Institute of Agricultural Extension Management (MANAGE),
Hyderabad. Training programmes on Techniques of Fracture Fixation were
organized twice, and another training programme on External Skeletal Fixation
of Fractures was organised recently, wherein the participants were given
hands-on training on different techniques of fracture fixation in animals. These
training programmes were very successful and were well appreciated by the
participants, mostly the veterinary officers of Department of Animal Husbandry
and private veterinary practitioners. As many more veterinary officers and
practitioners have expressed their desire to have hands-on training programme
on Fracture Fixation Techniques, this course is being organized, wherein the
main focus will be on basics of internal fixation techniques such as
intramedullary nailing and bone plating.
Objectives:
Veterinarians in the field level, be it in the State Department or in private
practice, generally hesitant to undertake fracture fixation by internal fixation,
mostly due to lack of technical knowhow and confidence. This course is aimed
at imparting practical knowledge to the practicing veterinarians on basic
techniques of internal fixation, which would help them acquire skill and
confidence in undertaking different techniques of IM pin and plate fixation and
also help boost their professional competence.
Participants:
The course is designed for the veterinary officers of the State Animal
Husbandry Department and Private Veterinary Practitioners.
Course venue:
The course will be offered at Training and Education Centre, ICAR-
Indian Veterinary Research Institute, College of Agriculture Campus,
Shivajinagar, Pune and District Veterinary Polyclinic, Aundh, Pune.
Course duration:
8th to 12th July 2019 (5 days)
Course content:
 Bone: Structure and Development (L)
 Fracture: types, diagnosis and healing; principles of fracture treatment (L)

 Decision making and selection of internal fixation technique (L)
 Basic principles of internal fixation (L)
 Techniques of intramedullary pin fixation (L)
 Principles of Interlocking Nail fixation (L)
 Principles of Bone Plating (L)
 Different types of bone plates and fixation, with special reference to locking
compression plate (L)
 Ancillary fixation techniques-cerclage wiring, tension band wiring etc. (L)
 Complications of internal fixation (L)
 Clinical and radiographic diagnosis of fracture (P)
 Demonstration and practice of IM Steinmann pinning in different long
bones (P)
 Demonstration and practice of cross pinning, stack pinning and tension band
wiring techniques (P)
 Demonstration and practice of bone plating (P)
Course Fee:
Rs. 10, 000 (Rupees ten thousand only) / participant, which includes
working lunch and tea, course materials and compendium. Cheque/DD should
be drawn in favour of: ICAR Unit, IVRI, Izatnagar; payable at SBI, CARI
Branch, Bareilly.
Travel/Accommodation:
Cost of travel, boarding and lodging will have to be borne by the
participants/sponsoring organizations. If available, stay will be arranged in
State Level Training Centre, Gokhalenagar or Guest House, College of
Agriculture, Shivajinagar, on prior request.
How to apply:
Applications are restricted to 15 veterinarians on first come first serve
basis. Interested persons may confirm their participation by mail at the
earliest (latest by 5th July 2019) to the Course Coordinator.
