Twelve Years A Slave

In the pre-civil war in United States, Solomon Northup, a free black man from upstate
New York is abducted and sold into slavery. Facing cruelty as well as unexpected kindnesses,
Solomon struggles not only to stay alive, but to retain his dignity. In the twelfth year of his
unforgettable odyssey, Solomons chance meeting with a Canadian abolitionist will forever alter
his life.

In comparing this film to the film here in Philippines, most of the actors are popular in
having a value Maganda ang Maputi. Based on the film review of Tiongson, the colonial
aesthetics of contemporary Philippine movies are both a derivation, an outgrowth and a
magnification of colonial aesthetics in our Spanish past and American present. So that, now in
present days, actors and actresses are characterized as having a physical beauty even their role
is not appropriate. And because of it, many Filipinos and Filipinas take surgeries and used any
beauty products just to reach the category to be an actors or actress also because of this, color
brown skin are discriminated unlike in this film that we've been watched which is shows that
Maganda ang Kayumanggi. It makes it more realistic and the film clearly portrayed on what
happened against the white and black American during the pre-civil war.

For the value of Masaya ang may Palabas, most of the time the Philippine movie are like
that. The films are just to entertain the audience but the essence of the movie are not really
there like the film of Vice Ganda entitled Super Parental Guardian. It makes us laugh but we
forgot what is the reality, the truth in this world. While the value of Masaya ang Palabas na may
Laman which is also shown in the movie. It's not just a simple film or movie, it's not only for
entertainment because beyond this there are lessons and message that we may learn which is
the real means of watching a movie.

Most of the movies here or even in teleseryes the value of Mabuti ang Inaapi is always
seen. The protagonist in Filipino film are pathetic because they only suffer and they did not fight
for their right as a human being. They just all accepted the sufferings as a natural state of man in
this world wherein the audience may affect their perspectives on real life. In contrast, the value
of Mabuti ang may Sariling Isip at Gulugod is shown in this film. In real life, we know that we are
correct we must fight for it and did not let anyone to disgrade us like what Solomon did in the
movie. Even he also suffered in being slave, he fight for his rights and did not take-over his
dignity to those people who have power. And by this film, it can have a great impact to the
viewers that can change their perspective in life especially to their personal problems.

Then for the last value which is Maganda pa ang Daigdig is also one of those value that
we encountered in Filipino movies. The massess patronized this kind of movie where in real life
it is a fantasy. For example, there are person or people that can solve all the problems even the
problem of others. The poor maiden end up married to a rich man and live in happy ending
which is always happen in the ending of our movie wherein real life it is impossible to happen.
Unlike in the movie of Twelve Years A Slave, as it grows it become more realistic. There is a twist
in ending that after all the struggles and hardships that Solomon encountered he still survive
and he met again his family after twelve years. And at this point, the value of Gaganda pa ang
Daigdig was shown. Some scenes are unexpected especially the ending that surprised to the
audience which they totally appreciate the movie.

This film is one of the example movie which worth in watching. At first, from the title
only of this movie I'm not interested to watch it. My first impression for this was it is only about
in being a slavery. So that for me, it was too boring to watch but I thought I was wrong to my
impression.

The film was interesting to watch. It was too curious on what can happen next because
the scenes are intense and unexpected.

Over all, I am amazed to this film, I felt that my emotions are like in a roller coaster. I
salute the actors and actresses that they did their role very well. They affect my feelings and I
thinj that I was also there in the movie. I also felt sad for the slave because they are not treat
them as a person which is also can happen in real life.

This movie did very much. Even it is based from the true story they portrayed it
perfectly with a twist. And after all, there are lot of things that I've been realized and I
appreciate in real life.
