INTRODUCTION

The analysis of a mechanism is the number of degrees of freedom; also known as the
mobility of the device. The mobility of a mechanism is the number of input parameters that
must be controlled independently in order to bring the device into a particular position.

Each link of a planar mechanism has three degrees of freedom when moving relative to
the fixed link. Not counting the fixed link; an n-link planar mechanism has 3(n-1) degrees of
freedom before the joints are connected. When connecting a joint that has one degree of
freedom such as a revolute pair has the effect of providing two constraints between the
connected links.

TERMINOLOGIES USED

Mechanism; is a combination of resistance bodies connected by movable joints to form a

closed kinematics chain with one link fixed transforming motions.

Mobility; is the number of input parameter that must be controlled independently inorder to
bring the device into a particular position.

Link; is a machine part of component that does not fit

APPARATUS

 A pair of wooden gears

 Nails

 Connecting rods

 Steel rule

 Cranking arm

 A pair of compass

 Hack saw
PROCEDURE

1).Assemble all the required apparatus on the worktable

2).Using the pair of compass draw two circular diagrams on a piece of wood of radius 8cm
and 6cm respectively

3).By the use of hack saw cut out the circular sections of radius 8cm and 6cm respectively

4).Calculate the degrees required for the successive gear teeth, on the wooden section by
using the degree indexing method.

For the 8cm circular estimate an approximation of 24 teeth and for the 6cm circular
estimation an approximation of 16 teeth

5).Nail two connecting rods on the two gears sections and nail the other ends of the links
onto the triangular section
DISCUSSION

According to Grashof‘s law that states for a planar four-bar linkage; the sum of the shortest

and longest link lengths cannot be greater than the sum of the remaining two link lengths if
there is to be continuous relative rotation between two members.
