Personal Employability Profile Assignment

My dream job is to be a Pediatric Speech-Language Pathologist. I have dreamt of having

this job ever since the first semester of my senior year when I took Sports Medicine 3 at my high

school. In Sports Medicine 3, throughout the semester, we interned at local therapy practices,

orthopedic practices, and nursing homes. We also took a field trip to a pediatric therapy practice

not too far from my school. On the field trip, I discovered my love and dream of being a

Pediatric Speech-Language Pathologist. Chit Chat Therapy was the name of the practice and it

specialized in physical, occupational, and speech therapy for kids. The speech therapist there,

had graduated from the University of South Carolina which was already my dream school and

made me even more excited to attend this university. Before I had experienced the day in a life

of a Pediatric Speech-Language Pathologist, I wanted to be a Radiologist Technician. When

interning at SpecOrtho, I realized that I no longer wanted to be one due to the repetitiveness of

the job’s daily responsibilities.

I have many reasons as to why I think that being a Pediatric Speech-Language

Pathologist would suit me. One reason is that I currently work at Child Watch in both YMCAs

near my house which is a place where parents can drop off their kids while they work out. I have

learned that I work well with kids. Another reason that I think that this job would suit me is

because I am always willing to compromise. I am also cooperative, which is a key skill when

being a speech-language pathologist due to the fact that many practices work on teams. In order
to become a Speech-Language Pathologist, you have to earn a graduate degree in Speech-

Language Pathology from a program accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation,

complete a supervised postgraduate clinical fellowship, and get a passing score on a national

exam.

Another job that I think would suit me is becoming a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer. I

used to want to be a Radiologist Technician. This job is similar, but my stepmom is a Labor and

Delivery Nurse which has made me think about being an Obstetric Sonographer. The reason I

think I would be good at this job is because on my TrueColor test, my color was Blue. Blues tend

to want to be unique which I feel is true about me. Within the Diagnostic Medical Sonographer

career, I can specialize in one or many things, which can open up my opportunities and set me

aside from other applicants when looking for a job. In order to become a Diagnostic Medical

Sonographer, you have the option of partaking in a two- or four-year degree programs which

colleges and universities both offer. Sonography programs will likely include courses in

anatomy, medical terminology, and applied sciences. Diagnostic Medical Sonographers can

earn certification by passing an exam.

Becoming a Registered Nurse is another occupation I believe would suit me. My

stepmom has inspired me to look into being a nurse previously by talking about her experiences

of being an OBGYN. I am very nurturing because of my current job working at the Child Watch

in the YMCA, which makes nursing a suitable career for me. My goal is to make a difference in

the world, which I found out was a major perk by interviewing someone I know who is a

Pediatric Emergency Room Nurse, Nurse Educator, and a Transport Nurse. She manages patient

care for her department and for individual patients. She also teaches certification classes. The

thing she likes most about her job is the fact that she felt like she is making a difference in the
world and the amount of flexibility her job allows her. The most challenging part of her job is

that she never knows what she is going to walk into or what type of patients she will attend to.

She has been working as a Registered Nurse for twenty-three years and started off aiming

towards her career by earning a bachelor’s degree in Science in Nursing and a bachelor’s degree

in Sociology. In order to set herself aside from other nurses, she became certified to teach classes

to other nurses. The advice she gave to me is that she believes anything worth doing is hard, but

the rewards outweigh the challenges. She believes that her career is a good career for having a

family because it always has a lot of flexibility. If she could go back and do it all over again, she

would because she not only loves what she does, but she also loves the fact that every time she

goes to work, she gets to help kids in need and feels that she is exactly where she is supposed to

be.
