Serving Together as a Family and as a Church

Philippians 1:27 (KJV) Only let your conversation be as it becometh the gospel of Christ: that whether I come and see you, or else be
absent, I may hear of your affairs, that ye stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel;

INTRO. Definition of “together”


Amos 3:3 (KJV) Can two walk together, except they be agreed?

1) Dictionary definition:
a. In or into one place, mass, collection, or group
b. In a body, as a group
c. In or into contact, connection, collision, or union
d. In or into association or relationship
e. At one time (simultanouesly)
f. In succession
g. By combined action (jointly)
h. In or into agreement or harmony
i. In or into a unified or coherent structure or an integrated whole
j. With each other
k. As a unit
l. Considered as a whole
2) Biblical definition: In the study of the language of the King James Bible, the Bible student will discover a unique built-in
dictionary. Searching throughout the Bible, the word “together” is coupled with words like: “joined”, “gathered”, “agreed”,
“yoked”, etc. In Amos 3:3, notice the word “two” along with the word “together”.
3) “Together” = “Two” + “gather”

1. Created #together

a. SING TO GOD TOGETHER: When God created the earth, the angels “sang together” (Job 38:7)
Job 38:7 (KJV) When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?

b. GLORIFY GOD TOGETHER: God created everything for His pleasure.


Revelation 4:11 (KJV) Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all
things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.

c. WORSHIP GOD TOGETHER: God created man and woman to worship (“worth-ship”) Him together.
Genesis 1:27 (KJV) So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female
created he them.
Genesis 2:7 (KJV) And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath
of life; and man became a living soul.
Genesis 2:18 (KJV) And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet
for him.
Genesis 2:22 (KJV) And the rib, which the LORD God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto
the man.
23 And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was
taken out of Man.
24 Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.

SUMMARY:
God created us “together” for His pleasure. (Rev. 4:11)
We are not only to glorify God “alone”. (cf. Gen. 2:18)
We are to worship God “together”. (cf. Job 38:7)

APPLICATION:
1) Worship God individually. (Personal Devotions)
Psalm 139:14 (KJV) I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and
that my soul knoweth right well.
2) Worship God with the family. (Family Altar)
Joshua 24:15 (KJV) And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve;
whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the
Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.
3) Worship God together with the local church. (Corporate Worship)
Heb 10:25 Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one
another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.

2. Fallen #together

a. TOGETHER IN SIN: Man and woman fell into sin together


SEWED TOGETHER: Together, all their efforts to cover up their sin is temporary and a waste.
Genesis 3:7 (KJV) And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig
leaves together, and made themselves aprons.
UNPROFITABLE TOGETHER: When together, all go the wrong direction “out of the way” and become useless.
Ro 3:12 They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no,
not one.

b. TOGETHER IN REBELLION: Fallen creatures unite together in rebellion against God.


Acts 4:26 (KJV) The kings of the earth stood up, and the rulers were gathered together against the Lord, and against
his Christ.
Rebellion in the Beginning
1) BABEL – the beginning of anti-Biblical unity
Ge 10:10 And the beginning of his kingdom was Babel, and Erech, and Accad, and Calneh, in the land of
Shinar.
Ge 11:9 Therefore is the name of it called Babel; because the LORD did there confound the language of all
the earth: and from thence did the LORD scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth.
Rebellion in History
2) BABYLON – the history of anti-God unity
Da 4:30 The king spake, and said, Is not this great Babylon, that I have built for the house of the kingdom by
the might of my power, and for the honour of my majesty?
Rebellion in Prophecy
3) MYSTERY OF BABYLON – the prophecy of anti-Christ unity
Re 17:5 And upon her forehead was a name written, MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF
HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH.
Re 18:10 Standing afar off for the fear of her torment, saying, Alas, alas, that great city Babylon, that mighty
city! for in one hour is thy judgment come.
Rebellion in Mystery (Secret)
4) MYSTERY OF INIQUITY – the hidden agenda of anti-Holy Spirit unity
2Th 2:7 For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out
of the way.
Rebellion in Futility (Armageddon; at the Second Coming)
Revelation 16:16 (KJV) And he gathered them together into a place called in the Hebrew tongue
Armageddon.
Revelation 19:19 (KJV) And I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together
to make war against him that sat on the horse, and against his army.
Rebellion in Misery (Gog and Magog; after the Millennium)
Revelation 20:8 (KJV) And shall go out to deceive the nations which are in the four quarters of the earth,
Gog and Magog, to gather them together to battle: the number of whom is as the sand of the sea.

c. TOGETHER IN DESTRUCTION: The Devil, the devils, and all the deceived will all together be judged.
Revelation 12:9 (KJV) And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which
deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.
Matthew 25:41 (KJV) Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting
fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:
Revelation 20:10 (KJV) And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the
beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.
Revelation 20:15 (KJV) And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

We sinned together.
We live in rebellion together.
We will be destroyed together.

3. Saved #together
Eph 2:5 Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)

a. PLANTED TOGETHER
Ro 6:5 For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his
resurrection:

b. QUICKENED TOGETHER
Col 2:13 And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with
him, having forgiven you all trespasses;

c. RAISED TOGETHER
Eph 2:6 And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:

4. Separated #together

a. UNEQUALLY YOKED TOGETHER: Out From Sin


Deuteronomy 22:10 (KJV) Thou shalt not plow with an ox and an ass together.
2Co 6:14 Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with
unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?
15 And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel?
16 And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols?...
b. EQUALLY YOKED TOGETHER: In To Christ
2Co. 6:16 …for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will
be their God, and they shall be my people.
17 Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and
I will receive you,
18 And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.

5. Joined #together

a. PERFECTLY JOINED TOGETHER: Agreement


1Co 1:10 Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and
that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same
judgment.
FITLY JOINED TOGETHER
Eph 4:16 From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth,
according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of
itself in love.
FITLY FRAMED TOGETHER
Eph 2:21 In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord:
TEMPERED TOGETHER
1Co 12:24 For our comely parts have no need: but God hath tempered the body together, having given more
abundant honour to that part which lacked:
BUILDED TOGETHER
Eph 2:22 In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.

b. COME (GATHERED) TOGETHER: Assembly


1Co 5:4 In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, when ye are gathered together, and my spirit, with the power of our
Lord Jesus Christ,
1Co 11:17 Now in this that I declare unto you I praise you not, that ye come together not for the better, but for the
worse.
1Co 11:18 For first of all, when ye come together in the church, I hear that there be divisions among you; and I partly
believe it.
Acts 14:27 (KJV) And when they were come, and had gathered the church together, they rehearsed all that God had
done with them, and how he had opened the door of faith unto the Gentiles.

c. FOLLOWERS TOGETHER
Php 3:17 Brethren, be followers together of me, and mark them which walk so as ye have us for an ensample.
Followers vs. Imitators
Follower: someone who supports and is guided by another person or group; a person who likes and admires
someone very much; someone who does what other people say to do; someone who imitates
Imitator: someone who does the same thing, the same way as someone else; someone who copies another;
someone who mimics; a counterfeit
1) The Timothy Model: One-on-One Discipleship
2 Timothy 1:5 (KJV) When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy
grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also.

d. PRAY TOGETHER
1) Pray WITH each other.
Ro 15:30 Now I beseech you, brethren, for the Lord Jesus Christ's sake, and for the love of the Spirit, that ye
strive together with me in your prayers to God for me;
2) Pray FOR each other.
2Co 1:11 Ye also helping together by prayer for us, that for the gift bestowed upon us by the means of
many persons thanks may be given by many on our behalf.

6. Serving #together

a. LABOURERS TOGETHER
1Co 3:9 For we are labourers together with God: ye are God's husbandry, ye are God's building.
b. WORKERS TOGETHER
2Co 6:1 We then, as workers together with him, beseech you also that ye receive not the grace of God in vain.
c. STRIVING TOGETHER
Php 1:27 Only let your conversation be as it becometh the gospel of Christ: that whether I come and see you, or else
be absent, I may hear of your affairs, that ye stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of
the gospel;

7. Suffering #together
a. IN PAIN TOGETHER
Ro 8:22 For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now.

b. WORK TOGETHER FOR GOOD


Ro 8:28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called
according to his purpose.

8. Glorified #together

a. CAUGHT UP TOGETHER
1Th 4:17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord
in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

b. LIVE TOGETHER
1Th 5:10 Who died for us, that, whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with him.

c. GATHERING TOGETHER
Eph 1:10 That in the dispensation of the fulness of times he might gather together in one all things in Christ, both
which are in heaven, and which are on earth; even in him:
2Th 2:1 Now we beseech you, brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and by our gathering together unto
him,
2 Thessalonians 2:2 (KJV) That ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by
letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand.

d. GLORIFIED TOGETHER
Ro 8:17 And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we
may be also glorified together.

SUMMARY:

CONCLUSION:

Philippians 3:13 (KJV) Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are
behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before,
14 I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.
