LABORATORY ACTIVITY #3
PROPER DONNING AND DOFFING OF PPEs

I. Desired learning outcomes

Personal protective equipment (PPE) refers to protective clothing, helmets, gloves, face
shields, goggles, facemasks and/or respirators or other equipment designed to protect the wearer
from injury or the spread of infection or illness. (CDC, 2018) They create a barrier between you and
the microorganisms. This barrier reduces the chance of touching, being exposed to, and spreading
germs infection or contamination. (CDC, 2017)

After performing this activity, students should be able to:

a. discuss the importance of correct wearing and removing of PPEs.
b. perform donning of PPEs in correct order.
c. perform doffing of PPEs in correct order.

II. Materials
Laboratory gown
Hair cap
Mask
A pair of gloves

III. Procedure

Before anything, do hand hygiene.

A. SEQUENCE FOR PUTTING ON PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT
The type of PPE used will vary based on the level of precautions required, such as standard
and contact, droplet or airborne infection isolation precautions. The procedure for putting
on (donning) and removing (doffing) PPE should be tailored to the specific type of PPE.
First perform hand hygiene
1. GOWN
a. Laboratory gown shall fully cover torso from neck to knees, arms to end of wrists,
and wrap around the back
b. Fasten in back of neck and waist.
2. HAIR CAP OR HAIR NET
a. Make sure to tie hair first.
b. Strands of hair so that these are all kept inside the hair cap.
3. MASK OR RESPIRATOR
a. Secure ties or elastic bands at middle of head and neck
b. Fit flexible band to nose bridge
c. Fit snug to face and below chin
d. Fit-check respirator

4. GOGGLES OR FACE SHIELD.

a. Place over face and eyes and adjust to fit
5. GLOVES.
a. Extend to cover wrist of isolation gown

Note:
Use safe work practices to protect you and limit the spread of contamination.
1. Keep hands away from face.
2. Limit surfaces touched.
3. Change gloves when torn or heavily contaminated.
4. Perform hand hygiene.

B. HOW TO SAFELY REMOVE PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT

There are a variety of ways to safely remove PPE without contaminating your clothing,
skin, or mucous membranes with potentially infectious materials. Here is one example.

 Remove all PPE before exiting the patient room except a respirator, if worn.
 Remove the respirator after leaving the patient room and closing the door.
 Remove PPE in the following sequence:

1. GLOVES
a. Outside of gloves are contaminated.
b. If your hands get contaminated during glove removal, immediately wash your
hands or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
c. Hold hands out in front away from the body.
d. Using a gloved hand, grasp the palm area of the other gloved hand and peel off
first glove.
e. Hold removed glove in gloved hand.
f. Slide fingers of ungloved hand under remaining glove at wrist and peel off
second glove over first glove.
g. Discard gloves in proper waste container.
2. GOGGLES OR FACE SHIELD
a. Outside of goggles or face shield are contaminated.
b. If your hands get contaminated during goggle or face shield removal,
immediately wash your hands or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer .
c. Remove goggles or face shield from the back by lifting head band or ear pieces .
d. If the item is reusable, place in designated receptacle for reprocessing.
Otherwise, discard in a waste container.
3. GOWN
a. Gown front and sleeves are contaminated .

reaching for ties .
d. Pull gown away from neck and shoulders, touching inside of gown only.
e. Turn gown inside out.
f. Fold or roll into a bundle and discard in a waste container.
4. MASK OR RESPIRATOR
a. Front of mask/respirator is contaminated — DO NOT TOUCH.
b. If your hands get contaminated during mask/respirator removal, immediately
wash your hands or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
c. Grasp bottom ties or elastics of the mask/respirator, then the ones at the top,
and remove without touching the front.
d. Discard in a waste container.
5. HAIR CAP
a. Remove hair cap from inside to outside

- Wash hands or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer immediately after removing all
PPE
- Perform hand hygiene between steps if hands become contaminated (CDC)

IV. Questions

II. Discussion

As you can see in the pictures above, Figure 1 - 5 it shows the Proper Donning of PPE’s and Figure 6 - 11
the Proper Doffing of PPE’s in a correct sequence.

Question 1. Why follow the correct sequence of donning and doffing of PPE’s?

 It is important to follow correct procedures when donning and doffing of PPE’s in order to
ensure the health and safety of workers. Incorrect procedures for the application and removal
of PPE can potentially expose the wearer to hazardous materials or the contamination of critical
areas.

Question 2. How important is hand hygiene after removing PPEs and when hands are contaminated
during the removal.

 Because, Hand washing is one of the simplest and most effective means of preventing the
spread of infectious diseases to patients and staff and reduce the microorganisms on the hands.

III. Conclusion

Therefore, using PPE and wearing it properly is vital to avoid unnecessary injury in the workplace.
Choosing not to wear PPE can be dangerous especially when it could save your life, Because Safety is
important and having an understanding of these various protection devices can help to prevent
hazardous injury.
