No matter where we find ourselves in life, when we sit quietly and check, in we know there is some part of our self that is
calling out for our attention. Maybe it’s your relationship to your body and your physical health and how it relates to your
overall energy, joy, and passion. Or perhaps it’s the work that you do, or the relationships in your life.

Whatever it may be, we need to check in and take a pulse, because we can only go on ignoring the call for so long.
When one aspect of us is suffering, it affects the whole. When we wait for things to magically course-correct on
their own, we risk encountering the bigger life falls.

I know — because it happened to me and I don’t want it to happen to you.

Life can be messy and none of us can avoid its ups and downs, but we can develop tools and practices that will
guide us so much more smoothly and calmly through the storms.

When my life came crumbling down, my toolbox was empty. Little by little along this journey of self-repair,
I have gleaned pearls of wisdom, practical tools, and created my own practices (which by the way, are a work
in progress) — things I can call upon when I need to shift from what’s not working in my life and into what is
possible.

Small steps can initiate great impact. That is why I’ve gathered 22 extraordinary Best Self Magazine friends,

Change how you connect the dots with the food on your plate and the suffering behind it. Taking care of your body
really is the number one vehicle on this path towards transformation. And while it's so important for us to nourish our
bodies, we also have to nourish our thoughts and feed ourselves positive meals and positive vibes.
The next time you have a thought that is disparaging or nasty and you're criticizing yourself — pause. Enter the holy
space, that holy gap between your thought and your action, because sometimes our actions will lead to all these
different destructive behaviors. Pause and rewrite it.
Do it again and again until what comes out of your head are positive thoughts about yourself, and you're no longer saying,
"I'm not worthy. I don't deserve it.”

‘Change Your Perception, Change Your Biology’
Between the environment and ourselves, lies the mind.
In epigenetics, the environment and perception control you — but these are things you can control. When you realize
that you are in charge, you are not a victim of genes. You have the ability to change the environment, change your
perception and therefore, you have the ability to change your genetic read-out. All of a sudden we go from victim to
master when we understand that we are personally responsible for creating health or disease, not based on our
genes.
You have to have a truth that you can follow. You have to have a belief that can take you to where you want to go. If
you look at the beliefs that we've been programmed with, a number of them are false. You have to come from

‘Conversation With Self’

Start to investigate the conversation that you are having with yourself, and really start to notice it. Notice where your
mind goes when something challenging happens in your life. Notice where you go when somebody does not give you
the kind of compliment that you might want. Notice where you go when you think you said something that sounded
stupid. Really notice where you go, because most of us have a habit and a pattern of going to the same place when
these things happen. The first step is starting to pay attention. Ask, “Why do I treat myself this way?” Start investigating,
start asking, Why?

‘Breathe in Your Best Self’

Take a deep breath through your nose.


There is a belief in our culture called the zero-sum model, which says there's only so much to go around, and if I have more
than enough, you will suffer. We can practice abundance by understanding that there is enough air for us, and that your
body will get the message when you slow down and breath in through your nose fully and relax the back of the throat,
understanding that that alone will begin to fire off the parasympathetic rest and restore your nervous system. You will
never be able to connect with your spirit as long as you have a body that is in ‘fight or flight’ overdrive of cortisol and
epinephrine. It just can't happen when you're in that constant state of panic.

‘Declare It’

Say to yourself, "What I want, I can have. The changes that I want to make, I can do," and start to work with that belief.
We have to see some hope or some possibility; otherwise, there's no action.
Next ask, "What are the changes that I want to make?” You have to know and get clear on where you want to go and
what you want to change in your life.
And finally, get support. Don't do it alone. If you're left to yourself, you may fall back into your old patterns, which is
probably why things haven't worked. Get some sort of support whether it's a support group or coaching or therapy.

‘Ease Life With Tapping’

There's so much progress that we can make with ease. It doesn't mean that everything is easy, but it means that we can find
more ease in every situation.
Through EFT (emotional freedom technique) tapping, you get really clear on the thought that's creating the physical anxiety,
because when we're feeling anxious or nervous or overwhelmed, it's not only in our brain. It's not just something that lives in
our head. We feel it with our whole body. We feel the knot in our chest or in our stomach, or the tension in our throat or
pain in our back — we physically feel our emotions.
We all need an emotional tune up. We live in a crazy world where we're inundated by information, so having a practice

‘Love Yourself & Your Plants’

If you want to shift today, if you want to make some changes that are going to be about loving yourself, go and get
some Post-It notes, and write five or six things about how amazing you are and stick them up on your mirror. When
you wake up tomorrow morning, look at them, believe them, say them:
I am beautiful, I am strong, I am heroic. I am worthy.

The next thing you have to do is to fall in love with your plants. If you don’t know what to do, get on YouTube, look up
recipes, work out how to take ingredients and make them into something, even if it’s just a crappy salad to start with. Just
give it a go. I believe juicing is the most powerful thing, and you can make a juice taste great just by putting in an apple. You
can actually supercharge your micronutrients by getting a juicer — that’s a great way of taking a lot of them in.

‘Take Pause’

Take pause and start exploring what course-correction life is asking. I see that in my own life all the time — my head is saying:
You should do this. My body or my heart is saying: Not now. You need rest. You need space. You need integration time. I think
that's what we leave out in the fast-paced world we are in; we don't recognize that we are part of nature. We are not
separate; we have our own internal seasons and if we don't respect them, we end up running on empty.

‘Invite All of You’
I'm completely willing now to invite conflict and confrontation, whereas before I never was. I'm completely okay with
disappointing someone else if that means that I'm honoring myself. Those are big shifts for me.
Everything isn't as black and white as we thought it was. What I have started to notice in my own relationship is that I'm
able to be in conflict and still in connection, because I trust that the container is strong enough to hold our differences and
strong enough to hold the truth of who each of us is.
If it isn't, we have to reevaluate the relationships we're in — and I mean any kind of relationship. If we're in a relationship
where we constantly have to overstep our own boundaries, it's not a relationship. It's not intimacy.
It’s a very simple process. Close your eyes, put one hand on your heart, one hand on your belly, breathe and start to listen,
because there is a voice that we spend most of our lives shutting down and avoiding. But the bottom line is, we know our truth.
Our truth doesn't exist outside of us. There's no one who can tell us our truth.”

‘Take an Energy Audit’

I use this really simple tool that I call ‘taking an energy audit of your life’. It involves looking at who is in your life right
now, the projects that you’re working on, and the overall direction of your life — then ask yourself what gives you energy,
and what takes energy away from you. Chances are, most of us create lives and create relationships that actually drain us
of energy.
The thing is that we don't need to change our jobs or change the people in our life. Instead, the question is: How can I have
this relationship or job give me energy?
Take an assessment of your life. What gives you energy? Keep that. What's taking energy away from you? Change those
things or actually get rid of some of those things. What happens is, at the end of the day, we get this net positive. It’s about
bringing forth a new level of awareness. We actually get a little bit more energy versus being drained negative at the end of
the day. After a series of that, it really adds up — and it helps you avoid wrinkles!

‘Get Spiritually Focused’

Do less self-help stuff.


Do an inventory of everything you're doing to be well and free and better and more improved. Look at what feels heavy
and what feels light — then do less of the heavy stuff. Quit a few things. At the same time, deepen your devotion to what's
working. This isn't about getting spiritually lazy. It's about getting spiritually focused.

‘Center Yourself – Quick Reset’

Increase your body-centered awareness. I'll actually just lead you through this little exercise that I do. It's my primary exercise
to center myself — a body awareness exercise. I think if we can stay connected to how we're feeling and start to recognize
when we're pulling out from that too far and then use this exercise to start to pull back in, it becomes easier to stay in our
center.
Close your eyes, feel your feet on the ground, and feel your hands in your lap. You can also do this laying down. Simply take a
deep breath in and then a normal exhale and then another deep breath in, a normal exhale, and do that one or two more times.
On the next inhale, take a deep inhale to the count of four and say, "I am." Just say it in your own mind. You're inhaling, count of
four, "I am." On the exhale, to the count of six, say "At peace." Inhale, count of four, "I am." Exhale, count of six, "At peace." Inhale, count
of four, "I am." Exhale, count of six, "At peace." Do that one or two more times on your own. Then when you're ready, open your eyes.
When your eyes are open, just kind of check back in with your environment. It's a pretty quick shift.

‘Know You Can Heal’

The biggest thing I want people to know is that they can heal. You don't have to be rich to heal; you don't have to be super
smart to heal. You just need to know that you can heal yourself and you need to love yourself enough to seek out the
healers, because there are so many people, including myself, that are here to support and empower you with education
and everything else.

‘Give The Mind Rest’

I would encourage everybody to just try sitting calmly, silently with themselves — even if it's just for a minute or two, and
focus on breath. One breath in, one breath out. Let your thoughts come in. Notice them, and then let them go on.
Bringing ourselves back and giving our mind a rest from the constant storytelling has such a dramatic effect in my life
from every aspect of abundance and love and self.
It's the one thing that everybody can do and it will absolutely change their life. It also teaches us impulse control, because
during that minute or two or whatever time you have, you will be constantly pulled in so many different directions. Each time
you resist that pull, you teach your mind to resist doing those things. That ability to focus carries on to every part of your life.
Obviously, the more you do this, the stronger you get at it. Even five minutes will positively impact you and will literally cost
you nothing.”

‘Permission for Ease’

Give yourself permission to make life easier. There’s no one who’s going to give you a medal for struggling.
There is so much benefit in putting your nose to the grindstone and putting in some perspiration. I love focusing on
something and putting my heart and my soul into it, but I don’t think it necessarily needs to be hard all the time, and I don’t
think that something being hard is valuable in and of itself. So, I want to give permission that it is okay to have an easy day
and it’s okay to have an easy week and it’s okay to take things out of your life that don’t feel that way.

‘Cultivate Openness’

Do something to cultivate openness. Create a habit that allows you to feel that the judgment and preconceptions in your
mind are dissolving for a moment. Keep an open notebook, which means that throughout the day you notice small
moments when you feel open and receptive, small moments when the look of your child's face, the lamp light on your
table, the scratches in the ice on the road, or something you're eating just stops you for a moment and asks you to notice.
Observe how you feel in that moment. Just write down those moments when you feel open, so at the end of the day you can
see how open or closed you were. And as you notice those open moments, put yourself in more of those situations that put
you in a more receptive, creative mode. That will heighten your awareness.

‘Self Care’

Self Care. We have to discard this notion that self-care is indulgent or selfish or something for the hippie fringe to engage in.
I've become passionate about self-care being the greatest form of activism available to women today. All you have to do is
commit every single day to a level of self-care that actually feels uncomfortable. Make psychic room for it, make logistical
space for it — even if you have to reconfigure some elements of your lifestyle around it.
I have many opinions as to what that self-care should look like. I believe it should look like detox, meditation, and a high-
level of integrity around food intake. I believe it should look like fun and sensuality and prioritizing time together in
community. It may look like different things to different people, but self-care needs to be the cornerstone commitment
of every single day that you wake up. You don't really have to figure anything else out because you will begin to be

‘Be Honest With Yourself’

Be very honest in self-monitoring yourself. Do not let a moment pass you by where you're deceiving yourself. For me,
deception means I don't want to look at the ugly in me. Please, just be honest with where you are, even if it's not a good
place. You will get a signal from above. You will get a signal from the ocean of love of what to do next, and you will be able to
connect your dots effectively, which will take you on your path of freedom.
One of the ways that we are dishonest with ourselves is we blame other people for what we're going through. It's a major
deception. Another way that we are dishonest with ourselves is when we find communities of people that support a limitation in
our character. There are many ways that we're dishonest, but they're so subtle at times that we're not even aware that we are
engaging in that.
Perhaps the highest level of dishonesty is to not consider yourself to be a pure soul, a peaceful soul, and replace that with limited
identifications. I would invite everybody to consider the reality that you are a pure and peaceful soul, and that everything you think,
say and do, connects you to your pure self, your best self, and your peaceful self. Because if you do that, you're really being, at the
deepest level, honest with your true self.

‘Spark Maybe’

Start with a mantra that you totally don't believe and repeat it a lot, like, "Joy is for me." Just keep saying it, even though it will
feel weird and silly. Maybe do it in a mirror. Louise Hay does amazing mirror work. Do that. That's going to feel weird and
silly, but just keep doing it until there's that one little spark that goes, "Maybe," and then grab onto that spark.

‘Invite Intuition’

We have to invite our intuition in because our intellect has locked it out. How? It's simple. You just say, "Okay, this is what my
head says." Put one hand on your heart, one on your stomach (because it's the gut and heart areas that have this higher
sensitivity to vibration) and say, "My gut says..."— or — "My heart says..." Then fill in the blank. Give that part of your inner receptors
a voice, and just spill it out loud, and experience what it feels like.
The first thing to remember when you’re connecting with your intuition is that you're connecting with the truth — for you, right
now. Consequently, it only makes sense that you can only really get true intuitive guidance if you're truly open, right? You can't ask
a question that you're not truly open to receiving guidance on. It seems like that would go without saying, but a lot of people don't
really want to know the truth.”

‘Food Is Medicine’

Start to change your relationship with food. If you are trying to eat healthier, instead of focusing on all the foods you can't eat,
shift your perspective. Look at healthy foods as nourishing medicine for your body. Instead of punishing yourself with diets,
try loving yourself enough to give your body the best foods it needs to thrive.
You can't heal a body you hate. Every food is either feeding health or feeding health problems.
