- a region bounded by an arc of the circle and the two radii to the endpoints of
the arc
In finding the area of a sector (of a circle), you need to get the product of the
ratio Measure of the arc/ 360 and the area of the circle.
Example 1: The radius of C is 30 cm. If mAB= 40, what is the area of sector
ACB?
Solution: To find the area of sector ACB:
A. Determine first the ratio: measure of the arc/ 360
= 40/360
= 1/9
B. Find the Area of the circle using the equation A=πr2, where r is the length
of the radius.
A = πr2
= π(30cm)2
= 900πcm2
C. Get the product of the ratio measure of the arc/ 360 and the area of the
circle
C. = (1/10) (100πcm2)
= 10πcm2
SEGMENT OF A CIRCLE
- the region bounded by an arc and the segment joining its endpoints the
endpoints.
C
Example1: The shaded region in the figure above is a segment of C. It is the
region bounded by arc AB and arc BA.
To find the area of the shaded segment in the figure, subtract the area of
triangle ACB from the area of of sector ACB
IF mAB= 60 and the radius of the circle is 9 cm, then the area of sector ACB is
one sixth (1/6) of the area of the whole circle. That is
To find the area of the shaded segment in the figure, subtract the area of
triangle XYZ from the area of of sector XYZ.
IF mXY= 90 and the radius of the circle is 4 cm, then the area of sector XYZ is
one fourth (1/4) of the area of the whole circle. That is
