SLCC

Skittle project part four

In part four of the skittle project In SLCC we are asked to find confidence intervals.

Confidence intervals are best to find the closest range of an area. The reason why this is one of

the best ways to find a range is due to almost exact value or range. We are first asked to

Construct 99% confidence interval estimates for the population proportion of yellow candies.

Since we know that we need the proportion for yellow candies, then that means we use the

function in our calculator’s 1propZInt. First we have to do our checks to see if we can even do

the problem.

The three Checks:

1. The candies are a random sample because you can’t predict the color of candies in the

bag.

2. Np(hat) (1- p(hat)

a. To find P(hat) you 390/1888=0.2066

b. Then you do the formula: 1888*0.2066(1-0.2066)= 309.4742

3. 1888 is likely less than 5% of the world’s population.

Then we would do/find:

n= 1888 (total candy that was collected in class)

X=390 (the number of yellow candy that was collected in class)

a= 100%-99%=1% or 0.01

P(hat)= 390/1888= 0.2066 (the proportion of yellow candies)

Then you get the ranges (0.18257, 0.23057)

Interpretation: We are 99% confident that the interval population proportion contains the true

proportion of yellow candies.

We are then asked to Construct 95% confidence interval estimate for the population mean

number of candies per bag. This one is different than the previous problem because we are now

finding mean instead of proportion. This time we are using the function TInterval. Let’s do our

first checks again.

The three checks:

1. The candies are a random sample because you can’t predict the color of candies in

the bag.

2. 1888 skittles is more than 30

3. 1888 is likely less than 5% of the world’s population.

Then we would do/find:

Sx= 16.5 (The standard deviation)

Note: I redid the standard deviation and mean from the last project. I realized I accidently

included the total amount with the data, which is why the data was wrong last time.

x (bar)= 65.1 (also known as the mean or the mean of the candies)

C-level= 0.95

n= 1888

a= 100%-95%=5% or 0.05

Then you would get the ranges (64.121, 66.079)

Interpretation: There is a 95% confidence that the population mean number of candies is between

64.121 and 66.079.
