CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

Exercise is important in our daily lives. Regular physical activity can help us

to improve our mood. If we don’t walk or exercise daily then we might easily get

prone to different diseases overtime and may lead to weight gain and obesity.

‘‘Exercise is physical activity that is planned, structured and repetitive for the

purpose of conditioning any part of the body used to improve health and maintain

fitness.’’ (World Health Organization, 2019, para 1).

There are four (4) types of exercise, the Endurance exercise, Strength exercise,

Flexibility exercise, and Balance exercise. The Strength exercise involves moving

your muscles against some kind of resistance. ‘‘It Increased muscle mass, which

makes it easier for your body to burn calories and thus maintain a healthy weight’’

(American Heart Association, 2018, para 2). Flexibility exercises stretch your

muscles and can help your body stay limber. Flexibility exercises involve slowly

stretching your muscle groups without jerking or bouncing (Dr Leon Creaney, n.d.,

para 4). On the other hand, Balance exercise refers to the ‘‘ability to stay upright

and steady, whether you're standing, kneeling, sitting or squatting. Balance

exercises improve your ability to control and stabilize your body's position’’ (Jill

M. Henderzahs-Mason P.T., 2016, para 2). Lastly, ‘‘Endurance exercise is an

exercise that increase our breathing and heart rate. Endurance exercise also called

aerobic exercise. This exercise keeps our heart, lungs, and circulatory system
healthy. Endurance exercises include walking, jogging, swimming, and biking’’

(American Heart Association, 2018, para 3).

These kind of excuse can be done outdoor and indoor. The most popular place

to do these is inside the gymnasium. Gymnasium is a room or building that has

equipment for sports activities or exercise.

In Sapang Palay National High School one of the course affected is Sports

track. Thus, having a gymnasium is requirement. However, the researchers noticed

that the equipment are only limited. Thus, only few students and teacher enjoyed

the facility. With this consideration in and the researchers come up with the idea to

improvise gymnasium equipment. Thus, Improvised Glider exercise machine was

proposed. Glider exercise machine is a cardiovascular gym equipment. ‘‘Glider can

be used to tone and strengthen the upper and lower body and improve flexibility

and it can use either at home or in a gym’’ (Tamsen Butler, n.d., para 1).

As compare to commercialized glider machine, this Improvised Glider exercise

machine was made up of used metal pipes. Thus, this is cheaper easy to reproduce.

With this, this study is conducted to evaluate the Improvise Glider exercise machine

in terms of Durability, Price, Efficiency, Compact, Tangibility, and Productivity

and to gather meaningful suggestions for the said equipment.

CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURES AND STUDIES

Working people and student schedules are so hectic and stressful. Thus, many

of them do not have enough time to exercise. Time is one of the biggest reasons

people don't exercise (National Academy of Sports Medicine [NASM], n.d., para.

1). Most of students don’t have enough time to go in gym. They could only exercise

during their class time in Physical Education. Most of them get feeling tired after

of their class that’s why they chose to go home or eat something.

We all know that exercise is important in our daily lives. Exercise can lead us

in a healthy life style. There are many types of exercise that we can do, and we are

focusing in Endurance Exercise. Jesica Salyer (2017) stated, ‘‘Muscular endurance

refers to the ability of a given muscle to exert force, consistently and repetitively,

over a period of time. It plays a big role in almost every athletic endeavor. You

might think of muscular endurance as stamina’’ (para. 1).

Rachael Rettner (2016) stated that

‘‘Aerobic exercises, such as running, swimming or dancing, are activities

that work your cardiovascular system, they get your heart rate up and make

you breathe harder. This type of exercise can reduce the risk of

cardiovascular disease, type two (2) diabetes and high blood pressure, and

may even lower the risk of cancer. (para. 3).

8
According to the American Heart Association (2018), ‘‘Endurance activity

keeps your heart, lungs and circulatory system healthy and improves your overall

fitness. As a result, people who get the recommended regular physical activity can

reduce the risk of many diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and stroke’’

(Endurance Exercise Aerobic, para. 2). It tells that Endurance exercises had a lot of

benefits to us.

Becky Miller (2011) tells that the Elliptical Trainer (Glider) is a gym equipment for

cardiovascular endurance.

‘‘Elliptical trainers are known for being effective, non-impact pieces of

cardiovascular endurance equipment. They allow you to step forward or

backward, and give the option to use your arms, or just your legs. Training

on an elliptical elevates your heart rate and offers a full body workout.

Though weight-bearing, the non-impact motion is gentle on the knees and

back’’ (para. 2).

Glider exercise machine were first released in the mid-1990s. ‘‘If you are using

the Glider you might just feel like you are walking on air’’ (EFITMENT, n.d.).

Glider help us to burn calories and tone our muscles. Tamsen Butler, (n.d.) said that

‘‘when we use Glider it works our nine muscle the front and back of thighs, hips,

calves, lower leg and shin, shoulder, front and back of upper arm

(biceps and triceps), chest, back, and abdominals’’. (para. 3).

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (n.d.)

9
‘‘This machine is good for people of all ages and recommends that all adults

recommended to do a minimum of 150 minutes of moderate-intensity

exercise each week. You can achieve this by using a glider for 30 minutes

per day, five days per week. If you do this exercise five days per week, you

can achieve your goal to be fit and lose your weight’’ (para. 2).

Sarah kate Rems (2017) stated that

‘‘Glider are on the list of the best full-body exercise equipment for the greatest

calorie burn. Glider is one of the best ways to get a full-body workout and is

a great way to burn calories and boost metabolism. It’s train our lower

body. And we always remember that, the greater the intensity of your

workout, the more calories you burn’’ (para. 2).

Related Studies

In the study conducted by Shahroz Khan (n.d.) which aimed to take this ideas

to improve and change existing designs of gym machines. The study revealed the

importance of understanding the trends and fact of exercise to know the needs in

the home exercise market.

The study is closely related in the present study since both of these focus on

gym equipment. However, the previous study focuses on advancement of gym

equipment whereas the present study focuses on the Improvising gym equipment

to lessen their expenses.

10
Another study focused on importance of improvisation and identity conducted

by Nordeson and Kjell Gunnar (2013) which aimed to determine the importance of

improvising machines or equipment and their identity. The result of the study

revealed that the improvising is helpful for us.

Eventually, the study related in the presents study since both are showing the

importance of improvisation. However, the present study focuses more to the

acceptability of improvise gym machine.

Mary James R. Fisher expenses.

Another study focused on gym heavy equipment conducted by Mary James R.

women’s lifestyle. The result of the study revealed that gym is important to those

women that is conscious in their body.

The study is closely related in the present study since both of these focuses on

the importance of gym. However, the previous study focuses on the importance of

gym equipment to women whereas the present study focuses of gym equipment to

all user.
