Use the following scenario to answer the next two questions.

Mercedes discovered employees were improperly installing an airbag chip right before the
release of the new X-class series. You’ve been hired to train employees to effectively uninstall
and reinstall chip appropriately. As a result the release date for the new X-class series will be
delayed by one month.
Which of the six Ds corresponds with the following statement. (Circle 1)
1. Mercedes will receive a 5% boost in sales as a result of their proactive training and
employees will choose to actively evaluate whether the airbag chip has been properly
installed.
a. Define the Business Outcome
b. Define the Complete Experience
c. Deliver for Application
d. Drive Learning Transfer
e. Deploy Performance Support
f. Document Results

Answer: Define the Business Outcome

Reading: Introduction: The Six Ds (Week 1)
Location: pg. 20
Reasoning: “Business objectives for training, in contrast, specify what trainees will do on the job
afterward and how that will benefit the business.”

Which of the six Ds corresponds with the following statement. (Circle 1)

2. Each Mercedes employee will be given a pocket sized card that provides proper instructions
for uninstalling and reinstalling the airbag chip.
a. Define the Business Outcome
b. Define the Complete Experience
c. Deliver for Application
d. Drive Learning Transfer
e. Deploy Performance Support
f. Document Results

Answer: Deploy Performance Support

Reading: Chapter 5 D5: Deploy Performance Support (Week 6)
Location: pg. 195
Reasoning: “Performance support is anything that helps an employee do the right thing at the
right time, every time.”

3. According to Holton, Bates, and Ruoan’s Generalized Learning Transfer Systems Inventory,
the probability of learning transfer can be influenced by three cluster factors. Match the factor
with the example.

a. Josh attended training and his sales have increased by 7%. He is Ability
hoping to reach 10% by the end of the first quarter in order to
receive the companies extended vacation incentive.

b. Donna and her employee’s went to a training session after hearing Motivation
her co-manager’s positive experience. Since the training session she
has implemented Feedback Wednesdays, where she encourages her
employees to send questions to a special email account and provides
responses every Wednesday.

c. Delivery Inc. saw a downshift in employee’s delivery time during Environment

the November and December months. They provided each driver an
improved GPS system that can better track local traffic and provided
training on how to use the new system. The next November showed
an improvement of delivery time by 65% and December by 72%.

Answer: a. Motivation, b. Environment, c. Ability

Reading: Chapter 4 D4: Drive Learning Transfer (Week 5)
Location: pg. 165 - 166
Reasoning: a. Motivation – “The extent to which they believe that improved performance will
be recognized and rewarded”, b. Environment – “The amount of feedback and coaching they
provide”, c. Ability – “Their work situation must afford them opportunities to apply the new
skills and knowledge”
4. Instructional designers should be aware of and avoid any aspects that might interfere
instruction. These are referred to as ‘bottlenecks’, an element that will inhibit a learner’s ability
to receive information. Match the scenario below with the most appropriate bottleneck.

a. A new eLearning module was rolled out training employees to Working Memory
apply the correct amount of points a prison inmate receives.
The amount of points a prisoner has is equivalent to the level of
prison security the prisoner is assigned to. The eLearning
module was one hour and had 20 learning objectives. Lots of
popups where added, in addition to the original narration, to
provide the learner with addition information for special
circumstances. What bottleneck violation is this?

b. Mr. Santos provided an eight hour training with only two short Attention
videos for examples and the rest of the instruction of delivered
by PowerPoint slides. The learners received only a 45 minute
lunch break and could be found on their cellphones often
throughout the training. What bottleneck is Mr. Santos in
violation of?

c. Mrs. Bartlett teaches Chemistry 101 and provides videos of Encoding and
mixing chemical compounds and its’ reactions to help explain Consolidating
the learning topic. Students have requested extra study sessions
with Bartlett to better increase understanding and how the
chemical compounds relate outside of the classroom. However,
Bartlett believes her choice of videos and lab exercises are an
accurate explanation of the subject matter. What bottleneck is
Bartlett contributing to?

Answer: a. Working Memory, b. Attention, c. Encoding and Consolidation

Reading: Chapter 3 D3: Deliver for Application (Week 4)
Location: pg. 114 - 124
Reasoning: a. Working Memory – The eLearning should have been broken down into smaller
learning sections so the learner could process the information. “When too much content is
delivered too quickly, it overwhelms your working memory’s capacity to adequately process
and make sense of it” (119).
b. Attention – Mr. Santos should have provided the learners with more breaks and
opportunities to practice what they were learning. “Give audiences a break from the fire hose
of information every ten minutes or so; use some sort of ‘hook’ to recapture attention” (p.
119). “Capture their attention by explaining (or better, illustrating) the benefits for them
personally; answer the ‘What’s in it for me?’ question” (p. 116).
c. Encoding and Consolidation – Bartlett should encourage more dialog between herself and the
students so they could make more meaningful connections to the subject matter. “An
important part of the practice of delivering for application (D3), therefore, is to utilize
instructional methods that enhance encoding, foster long-term memory, and facilitate sequent
retrieval” (p. 121).

5. You’ve been working with your project SME’s for six weeks. Refer to the SME Prez
(PowerPoint) from week 2 and write a short paragraph (at least 5 sentences) on your experience.
Some suggestions are, how you’ve overcome barriers (if any), your relationship with the SME,
and what meaningful experiences you’ve learned and/or plan to incorporate in the future. Be sure
to include your team and SME’s name.

Answer: Answers will vary.

I’m on Team TFG (The Flemming Group) working with Dr. Thomas on a familiarity training
project. Building a professional relationship has not been a difficult task as she is an engaging
SME. Outside of meetings our team keeps Dr. Thomas informed of our progress through email
and has been kind enough to allow us to text her if needed. Our good-standing relationship has
helped when we’ve been unable to make a deadline. The team made sure to contact her
beforehand and apologize, along with giving her new date for the material delivery. Dr. Thomas
has taught me the importance of effective communication through email. She kindly sends a
reply to tell us she received our materials and a tentative time of return. I have found her
strategy to be very helpful for proper communication and plan to incorporate it at my own job.

Location: Slides 1 - 22
Reasoning/Criteria: Look for applied knowledge:

 The team they’re on and who their SME is

 Building relationship with the SME
 How the project has helped grow their experience
 How they view the role of the SME and their own active engagement
 Any barriers they’ve overcome and how
6. Sam, an instructional designer, has been hired to create a training for Amazon employees. He
wants to design the complete experience so learners transfer their training long after the training
session. Place the Complete Design Experience in the correct order.

Answer: Preparation, Guided Learning, Transfer and Application, Achieving Improvements

Reading: Chapter 2 D2: Design the Complete Experience (Week 3)
Location: pg. 81
Reasoning: “The Second Discipline practiced by the most effective learning providers is that
they design and manage the learner’s complete experience—from how the program is
positioned in the invitation, to the preparation expected in Phase I, to the instructional design
of Phase II, to the accountability and support of Phase III, to how progress will be assessed and
recognized in Phase IV. Their plans also include how elements of the transfer climate will be
enhanced and coordinated” (p. 105).
