AVolune 19 Coditors’ Notes
Hello, readers! We here at Jodo Project like to try and make reading JoJo's Bizarre Adven-
ture an entirely natural experience for English-speaking audiences, but there are still some
things from the original Japanese that we feel could use additional explanation or commentary.
‘Giorno Giovanna vs Haruno Shiobana’ - You'll have to trust us that “Giorno” and “Haruno”
sound a bit more similar in Japanese! Also, while 10.a Western audience, Giovanna is recogniz
able as a female name, it’s less easy for a Western reader to recognize that Haruno is a ve
feminine name as well, Giorno’s name is rather effeminate.
‘Money given in yen’ - We really, really didn’t want to do this, and in lact an earlier version of
this volume (as well as the color chapter as it originally appeared in Weolely Jump) had the
monetary amounts in ire! However, upon closer examination of future volumes, we realized
that there's places we just can't redraw where yen amounts are drawn into the page (e.g. taxi
meter), so we had to sacrifice accurate currency. Our apologies. You can blame the Jump
editors for this one
“‘Thate it because it’s useless... (page 111)’ - Dio's famous battlecry, “muda muda muda.”
(which Giorno also shares), literally means “useless”. The original Japanese word used here
‘was “muda,” so t0 a reader in the Japanese edition, when Giorno repeats the word “useless,”
Giorno is not just condemning something that he does not approve of, but he is also clearly
saying “Muda muda muda."
‘Gold Experience’ - named fora 1995 Prince album, The Gold Experience, ereated while
Prince was still going by the unpronouncable symbol. Giorno is sometimes said to have been
designed alter Prince: what do you think?
“Bruno Buccellati’- The first of the food theme names that are pervasive in part 5, Bruno is
‘named afier buccellat, a type of Italian fig cookie. We think. We picked the romanization of his
‘name that we thought made the most sense (preserving a real first name and a food surname),
which also happens to be the only romanization combination which has yet to make it onto
official merchandise, We tried.
“MUDADA (page 179)'- Normally, we would translate all Japanese into English. However,
‘mudada’ is so famous of a battlecry that we're honestly afraid to change it, Please see the note
about ‘I hate it because it’s useless...’ above.
‘We have wanted to redo part 5 with a translation that does this are justice ever since we first
teamed up to work on Stone Ocean years ago, so working on this project is like a dream come
true for us. We hope you'll stick with us and continue to enjay the story together in the Future!
