Multimodal Project
For the multimodal project, I decided to create an advertisement for the Northville High
School Drama Club, a club in which I am a former member of. This advertisement is meant to be
handed out as a flyer, front and back, to both a general student population and to a general
audience as well. The exigence for this advertisement is to spread awareness to anyone about the
activities of the club and how someone could support or potentially join the club.
The Northville High School Drama Club is a club that welcomes members of Northville
High School to look into different aspects of theatre and explore its variety of disciplines. The
Drama Club also openly invites people to support their activities through the four shows that
they organize and produce a year. This is why the information needs to be spread to the large
audience of Northville, Michigan, as anyone from students to parents can participate in a variety
of different ways. One could simply attend a show to enjoy the theatrical work put on by the club
or attend to show support for the performing arts. There is a multitude of reasons as to why
someone may want to participate, so it seems necessary to put out this advertisement to gain
attraction.
The reason I chose a flier to advertise this community is for the ease of spreading it
around to people. Within the community of Northville, Michigan, there is a lot of events and
festivals in which a majority of the community attends. This would be the perfect place to hand
out fliers to those who may have never heard of the club before. They could be handed out on
street corners and at booths to anyone who may be the slightest bit interested.

There were different aspects within the flier that were done purposefully to grab
attention. To begin, the entire front of the flier just says “NHS DRAMA CLUB” and has a
picture of Sock and Buskin, the two iconic masks that are closely related to the theatre as a
whole. The font chosen was one that is supposed to represent that of a high school letterman
letter. This block font is closely related to the high school experience so the choice of this font
seemed to be the simple option. The colors picked are also that of Northville High School’s
colors: orange and black. This will also help members of the community understand that we are
talking about Northville High School and not the rival Novi High School.
On the back of the poster, each body of text and the corresponding picture is specifically
designed to convey a certain meaning. Under the section entitled, “Who are we?” the body of
text gives a shorter version of the club’s mission statement so anyone reading can quickly
understand what the club’s purpose is. The picture that goes along with this text is a dance
rehearsal for one of the musicals. The words “Northville High School Drama Club” are in bold,
specifically, to call attention to the full name of the organization. Since the full name is not
present on the front of the flier, it seemed like a wise idea to call attention to the full name as
soon as possible.
In the next section entitled, “What is our schedule?” a basic outline of the year’s
performances are listed out. I chose to not include specific dates in this flier to encourage the
person who is reading to do their own personal research into the club. In the next section, I
encouraged the reader to check out the official Facebook page for the club so they will remain up
to date. I also put the word “four” in bold to emphasize the number of performances put on by
the club each year. Most high schools in the area do about two or three shows a year, but the

Northville High School Drama Club tries to go do more than average as to encourage
participation in the many events and roles for both students and general audiences alike.
The last section entitled “How do you get involved?” contains some basic information
about how anyone may become involved in the club’s activities. I specifically added directions
for students to participate as to make it easier for them if they desire to join. The picture that I
included with this section is the yearly photo taken of the club. This photo shows us getting
The biggest constraint on the flier has to be distribution. There needs to be a community
event already set up in order for the flier to be distributed. Also, there is somewhat of a stigma
behind the use of flier and people may not desire to take a flier if they are not interested in the
concept in the first place. Overall, I do believe that the positives that this flier brings will
Reflection:
I really enjoyed doing the multimodal project. The reason being is that I never had the
opportunity to create something like this when I was an active member of the club. When I held
positions of authority within the student officers, my role was never anything with media, but
more about student relations than anything else. So this experience was something to take me out
of my comfort zone and try something new. I appreciated the fact that I could feel like a high
schooler again with fewer worries and focus on my old mindset of trying to grow the club that I
The actual creation of this project was something that took me a while to put together. I
was never very skilled artistically so I had to attempt to use the resources available to me and put

together something that was both cohesive and creative. The program that I ended up using was
Canva, an online poster maker that has a lot of options that are available for free to anyone with
wifi access. This was a program that I had used once or twice before so I had a basic familiarity
with the interface. But using it to create this flier was still a challenge as I needed to make this
reflective of the amount of effort I put into it. I desired to make this one of the best digital art
pieces that I have ever put together and I would not let my lack of skill be the reason that I
Although this project will never see the light of day outside of the classroom, I believe
that if I had created it in high school that it would have been used in its intended purpose. In fact,
right before I started the creation of this project, I received a text from one of the drama club
supervisors asking if I had any ideas of what the club could do for future advertisements. Who
knows, I may send this to them in the future if they ask again.
