SITUATION ANALYSIS

1. Fragile X syndrome is a condition that cause a range of developmental problems

that leads to learning disabilities and cognitive impairment. They may have
Attention Deficit Disorders (ADD) which impairs theirs ability to maintain
attention and focus on specific tasks. Approximately one-third of individuals with
Fragile-X syndrome have features of autisms-spectrums disorders affect
communication and socials interactions.
Fragile X syndrome is an examples of X-linked dominant inheritance.
 If the father has Fragile X syndrome, whom will he pass the disorders to his sons or daughters?
2. Red-green color blindness is the most common form of color blindness.
Mark Zuckerberg, the creator of the social networking site Facebook, is red-
green color blind. That was said to be the reason why the dominant color of
Facebook is blue; this is the easiest color for him to see.
This condition is caused by a recessive gene found in the X-chromosomes.
 Can a normal daughters have a color blind father? A color blind mother? A normal mother?

3. A pedigree is a diagram that makes it easier to visualize relationships within

families, particularly large extended families. Pedigree are often used to determine
the mode of inheritance of genetic diseases.

In a pedigree, squares represents males, and circles represent females. Shaded

symbols represents those who possess the traits. Horizontal lines connecting the
male and a female represent mating. Vertical lines extending downward from a
couple represent their children. Subsequent generations are therefore written
underneath the parental generations and the oldest individuals are found at the top
of the pedigree.
GENERAL QUESTIONS:
1. Base on the above situations, what are the different way in which a trait or a
gene condition can be inherited?

2.How can we predict inheritance patterns?

3. What are these predications or estimations of chances of inheritance helpful?

Next Meeting
Answer the following questions:

2. What are the sources of variations?
3. Why is genetic variation important?
