Context of the Problem

Earthquakes, floods, typhoons, volcanic eruptions, climate change, natural calamities;

these are all just waves of catastrophic events created by mother nature to try to teach the people
of earth a lesson. And as a result of these calamities, families, whether they may be living with a
roof above their heads or they are homeless, the rich or the poor, the people of color or the Asians,
all over the world would experience adversity, maybe even death, for death does not discriminate .
From the great tsunamis of Japan, to the scorching fire that engulfed the Amazon rainforest; the
typhoons in the west, to the earthquakes in Mindanao, the inevitable and unexpected cannot be
escaped. As a tropical country, the Philippines only has two seasons, the dry season and wet
season which typically means that the people living there get to experience only either rainy days
or cloudy/sunny days. And as much as the Filipinos love rainy days to beat the heat, fate has not
been kind on some areas of the country.

Flooding is very prominent in the Philippines whether because of improper disposal of

garbage blocking the drainage holes and sewer lines, or there isn’t an inadequate number of
drainage/storm holes being placed in strategic places, or maybe the sewage system cannot
accommodate the frequent flooding; maybe the measurements have to be adjusted? Or maybe
government officials corrupt the funds in building a better sewage system, or simply because it is
a result of a catastrophic events such as an earthquake. Whatever the reason may be,
plumbing/piping, and some tinkering and designing new devices will surely help alleviate the
problem.

Problem statement

In the near future, the researchers envision a well thought out sewage system that can
rival or prevail over first world countries. Devising new methods and technologies to help fight
flooding in the Philippines, specifically on the city streets of Davao City’s Matina Pangi and
Bangkal will be the focus of the study. By surveying the most flood prone parts in Davao city, the
researchers can get a gist of the topographical aspect of the problem. From there, the researchers
look for links or similarities as to how the streets of Matina Pangi and Bangkal are being flooded.
The researchers will then create a hypothesis and conduct an experiment based on the data
collected. The people who suffer flooding in Matina Pangi and Bangkal will be the main
beneficiaries of the study. The results will contribute to the movement in making the Philippines a
first world country.

Motivation

Disaster risk reduction cuts across different aspects and sectors of development. 10 out
of 17 “Sustainable Development Goals”, firmly establishing the role of disaster risk reduction as
a core development strategy. Goals such as Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and
sustainable industrialization and foster innovation, make cities and human settlements inclusive,
safe, resilient and sustainable, take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts.

The Philippines which is a typhoon prone country have been struggling in flash floods, a
build up of water during light rain, etc. The country has been tackling this problem and slowly
improves its action with solutions that may contribute to lessen floods. One of these is the efficient
drainage system.

Drainage system is a system of natural or artificial channel through which water flows or
drains for carrying off excess water. A drainage system is designed that the water flows away
quickly, smoothly, and is disposed off in a surface watercourse. To prevent flooding, an efficient
drainage system is therefore essential to allow water to flow off away from the ground as quickly
as possible.

This study motivates the researchers to help or bring up solution to such causes and will
have a more efficient drainage system in Davao City particularly in Matina Pangi and Bangkal.
The existing drainage system in the said areas are no longer efficient because during heavy
rainfall, the water starts to overflow. Instead for the water to drain off, the water tends to build up
on the ground quickly which causes flood. To address the drainage problem is to have a good
and efficient drainage design and maintenance work to prevent flooding which will provide ease
to the people in the area.

Objectives

 To study the existing condition of road and urban storm water drainage in some areas in
Matina Pangi and Bangkal
 To be able to design an effective storm water drainage
 To be able to identify the extent of impact of urban storm water drainage on roads
Scope and limitations

The study focuses on the analysis of existing drainage condition and to propose the
appropriate drain size and effective drainage system. The study to be conducted would be limited
to some areas in Matina Pangi and Bangkal. The study would be done through utilization of data.
The data collection will be taken to some drainage systems in the area. The study will not cover
plumbing connection to different structures within the area and will be limited to storm drainage
and catch basin only.
