Professional Dispositions Statement Assessment

My personal professional disposition statement is that I believe positive student-teacher

relationships help to generate the foundation for student success. Let me elaborate, without

positive and impactful student-teacher relationships, lessons and instruction will not mirror the

lives of students, students will not be at their best behavior, and the teacher will not meet the

individual needs of the students to learn both academically and socio-emotionally. After

completing my professional self disposition assessment, it is evident that my disposition

statements align with my responses on my self assessment. I strongly agree with each of the

criteria statements on the assessment, because all teachers should possess and practice such

qualities, however, there were a few statements on the assessment that especially resonated with

my personal statement such as, “I believe the classroom environment a teacher creates greatly

affects students' learning and development”. Creating a classroom environment that is conducive

for learning and development is produced by establishing positive student-teacher relationships.

Within my program of study, the last 2 years, I have grown tremendously when it comes

to my professional dispositions, merely because I am now able to put them completely into

practice via my student teaching experience. Student teaching has allowed me to create a warm,

humorous, and engaging classroom learning environment were my students feel challenged,
accepted, and safe. I make it my number one priority to make my students feel comfortable to

express themselves both academically and socially. Yet, being within the first few weeks of the

school year, this is a working progress but I already see how my students respond to me as I

learn more about them as individuals. A specific example of this, is I have memorized about 120

students name within the first 4 days of school. I learned their faces and names to match. This

was a challenge but my students were surprised and happy that I knew who they were within the

first week of school. I think the first step towards positive student teacher relationships is making

sure you know all students names and how to properly pronounce them as well.

I believe everyday I will grow and develop my stance on my professional dispositions

and I will take steps to improve when necessary. For example, learning my social studies

curriculum, it is brand new to me, and it is a challenge to implement to a diverse student

demographic who are overwhelming disadvantaged. Nonetheless, “ I believe a teacher must use

a variety of instructional strategies to optimize student learning”, no matter how diverse or

different students are from one another. In order to do so, I will continue to reach out to certain

teachers that I work with for support, I will work with students and their parents to see what

works best for our students, and I will work towards mastering the social studies curriculum by

doing the proper research and utilizing all available resources at my disposal.
