Compare and Contrast Essay

Can two articles on the same topic be different? “Trafficked: Three Survivors of Human

Trafficking Share Their Stories”, by Un Women, and “Risk Factors for Domestic Child Sex

Trafficking in the United States”, by Lisa Fedina, are articles that give insight on human sex

trafficking in society. “Sex trafficking is the use of force, fraud, or coercion to obtain some type

of labor or commercial sex act” (“What is Human Trafficking”). Fedina’s article uses logos to

give facts and stitistics to the reader on sex trafficking. The Un Women article uses pathos for

the readers to sympathize with the victims feelings. These similarities and differences are shown

by using pathos, logos, text structures, and visuals to explain sex trafficking. Using these

rhetorical elements are important, because it provides the readers with a more balanced

perspective on the articles. The way the authors explain human sex trafficking using these

techniques helps the reader understand that every article has similarites and differences that can

be observed through the same topic.

The scholarly journal article differs from the, Un Women’s article, on how information is

presented. The journal uses references and biographies about the authors who have helped create

the article. These references and biographies allow the information to be more factual, without

being accused of plagiarism, and gives the audience an insight on the creators. Utalizing

references and biographies in the article is an example of how the journal, “Risk Factors for

Domestic Child Sex Traficking in the United States”, uses structure to show how the information

on sex trafficking will be conveyed to the audience. References are important when facts or

statistics are being conveyed, because it shows where the authors are getting this information

from. The authors use structure as a strategy to help convey the facts on sex traficking.

In “Risk Factors for Domestic Child Sex Traficking in the United States”, the structure of

the article affects how the information is given. For example, the article includes an Abstract. An

Abstract is placed at the beginning of a text to summarize what the article will be about. This is a

part of how structure is used as an important element because it plays a role in how the authors

present sex trafficking. A brief explanation on sex traficking will be discussed for the audience,

before fully reading the text. This makes “Risk Factors for Domestic Child Sex Traficking in the

United States” structure different from the article, “Trafficked: Three Survivors of Human

Traficking Share Their Stories.”

On the other hand, “Trafficked: Three Survivors of Human Trafficking Share Their

Stories” has characteristics that makes this article different, and stand out as well. This article

utilizes the title to give insight on what the article may possibly be about. For instance, the title

of the article allows the audience to know that the article will possibly be about three trafficked

victims. This article is related to a biography by three victims sharing their stories and experience

in sex traficking. The title is an example of a strategy used by the authors, and a structure that

affects what and how the information is presented.

Throughout “Trafficked: Three Survivors of Human Trafficking Share Their Stories”,

this article includes pictures. These pictures make the article unique, because not only does it

provide a visual, but it also includes captions to go with them. The captions below the pictures

give a detailed explanation to support the information being presented on sex traficking. As the

authors use these pictures to explain sex traficking, this is a prime example of how structure and

logos play a role in how the facts are being explained. Therefore, the pictures being used are

visuals that make the text different, in relation to sex trafficking.

Pathos is a rhetorical element that is used to make this sex traficking article set apart from

the other. The authors not only state statistics and important information, but they use emotions

to connect with the readers. This appeal is used to make the audience sympathize with the

victims as they share their stories. For instance, in the article the victim says “At first when I

returned, I felt ashamed and I didn’t want to show my face”(“Trafficked”, 2019). Pathos is used

in this statement to connect with the readers emotions as the victim shares there feelings on being

apart of sex traficking. In fact, as pathos is utilized it helps structure the articles analysis.

The two articles have various differences, but they have similar characteristics that help

explain sex trafficking to the intended audience. As you read, “Trafficked: Three survivors of

human trafficking share their stories”, and “Risk factors for domestic child sex traficking in the

United States”, they both include a date of publishing. Including the date an article was

published can be very useful when stating information. The publishing date can make the

information more credible, depending on its relevance. The publishing date for both articles is a

form of how the articles both use structure to convey information. Certain texts fail to have a

date of when they were published, which is why this is important. Furthermore, these articles are

similar to having a date for publishing included in the text.

Every article has similarities and differences. These similarities and differences are

important for the reader to understand, while trying to process how the information is given.

While comparing and contrasting articles, it gives the reader a chance to see how the information

on the same topic can be presented in different formats. The scholarly journal article and the

“Trafficked” article are two examples of how the same topic can be discussed with rhetorical

devices to give a balanced perspective. Distinguishing the two differences and comparing the

similarities are important, because the reader should understand that every article is different on

how the information is conveyed. Therefore, the scholarly journal and the Trafficked article both

use pathos, logos, text srtuectures, and visuals to communicate the infiormation on sex

trafficking to readers.
