Materials needed:
• Five Little Monkeys book
• Xylophone or recorder
Procedure:
A.S. 1. How many of you have heard the song Five Little Monkeys?
2. How many monkeys were in the song?
3. What were the monkeys doing in the song?
4. How many of you know what it means to count backwards? Show
me.
1. Read the Five Little Monkeys book to students and have them read
along with you.
2. Give students their instruments and explain how to use them.
3. Explain rules for activity (i.e. no using instrument unless they are
instructed to, no hitting anyone else with them, hands to ourselves).
4. Explain activity
a. Once I say the number of monkeys, they will need to play the
instrument that number of times (i.e. “four little monkeys” play
instrument 4 times)
5. Read story and enjoy (:

Closure: ask students to count backwards from 5 and then from 4 and then
from 3. Check for understanding and answer any questions students may
have.
Educational Objective: By the end of this lesson, students will have learned how to
use a new musical instrument and have learned how to count backwards.
