Communication is key to living in today’s society, no matter what aspect of life that is used.
Communication is what really separates homosapiens from all other species, sure dolphins can
speak to each other, but not as complex as humans do. Communication includes not only verbal
cues but also non verbal, this is what adds complexity, because sometimes it can take much skill to
interpret correctly. Now when in a group it is essential that people use their skills in verbal,
nonverbal, and all things in between to make sure the group is cohesive and stays on task the entire
time. That is exactly what my group and I did. We are all introverts that when forced to talk to
others, can, but is not preferred. We had to develop verbal skills extremely fast to coordinate our
Like most groups my group used Tuckman's stages of group development. It allowed us to
figure out how individually we all collaborate and coordinate with each other. When forming it
was very awkward, barely any verbal communication and absolutely no non verbal cues. That
sped us into storming where and conflict was settled and all ideas were mixed together. Within the
storming stage we all collaborated our ideas and thoughts together in order to find the right project
for us. Next was the norming stage, where group norms were established and boundaries were
upheld. In the norming stage the titles and specific jobs of the people within the group are
exercised more, there is also more feedback and trust that becomes established. We then entered the
performing stage, this is where we accomplished our task, my group and I decided to do our
service at the Syracuse Museum. My group helped with tours and the labeling system they used.
Once we had finished our project we went into the adjourning stage of Tuckman’s model. In this s
tage we achieve our goal and get our grade, the group then is no longer needed, the task
This experience and class as a whole was something new. Learning new techniques and
skills helping improve communication allowed myself to implement it into normal day
conversation and see the result of it. My groups goal if we did not have to get a good grade would
have been to improve our nonverbal cues, all of us within the group are introverts, we do not like
talking that much and so when we do it can be difficult to try and notice nonverbal cues when we
ourselves have never seen them. With us working on recognizing those and also striving for a good
grade our group was able to communicate to each other and to others that we needed to speak to
better. With the Syracuse museum would we were able to easily see when boundaries were pushed
and when something said was or wasn't to their liking, thus helping us find a direct path to the
solution needed. The experience allowed us all to grow and strengthen ourselves and each other in
our communication habits and skills, thus making communication less hard to us and everyone
around us.
Communication is the key to advancement of the world, so if needed everyone should take a class
on it just for the sake of human advancement into a new and improved future with better
communication. Although everyone's experience with communication is different, it's all the same
material, our skills may vary but the content never changes, so thus everyone must be constantly
trying to improve their communication skills. So i'm allowing my experience within this class to try
and change my communication skills for the better in every aspect possible. In the end
communication can either lead to victory or demise, its up to the communicator to decide.
