ORIGINAL PRODUCT NEW PRODUCT
Volume/Air Space
● First, we calculated the volume of the total air space using πr2(h).
● Second, we looked for the air space being used by the liquid, using the same equation
with the correct dimensions and adding that to ((4/3)πr3 )/2.
● Using these two found numbers (163.36 total - 107.4633 unused) we calculated the
percentage of air space as 72% and unused being 28%.
● Doing similar calculation with our new product, we found that it would reduce this
number to being 11.5% of the air space being unused.

Surface Area/Plastic
● When finding the surface area of the
prototype we had to subtract the missing
Original cylinder
● We found the surface area of the whole
● First when we calculated the surface area clear, outer plastic
of all the plastic together ● 2π 2x13 + 2π 2^2 = 188.4955 = outer
● We had to accommodate for the cylinder ● Then we split the inner purple cylinder into
two parts: a hemisphere and a cylinder
we’d be getting rid of for a better design without a base. So we found the lateral and

necessary because we needed to find the ● 4π x 1.25^2 /2 = 9.8174 = hemisphere
purple area to calculate the difference of ● 2π x 1.25 x 11.5 = 90.3207 = lateral cylinder
the two cylinders. ● 90.3207 + 9.8174 = 100.1381 = inside
cylinder
● Next we subtracted the inside cylinder from
the total to find the amount of unused
plastic
