std:xt FINAL EXAMINATION Date:28/02/2018 Time: 2hr30min ‘SUBJECT: ENGLISH SET:2 SECTION A (READING SKILS) Q.1 Read the given passage carefully and answer the questions that follow: - 1. Iwas one of a party who hired an up — river boat one summer, for a few days’ trip. We had none of us ever seen the hired up- river boat before; and we did not know what it was when we did see it. 2. We had written for a boat _ a double sculling skiff; and when we went down with our bags to the yard, and gave our names, the man said: “Oh, yes; you are the party that wrote for a double Sculling skiff. It's all right. Jim, fetch round The Pride of the Thames”. 3. The boy went, and re- appeared 5 minutes afterwards, struggling with an antediluvian chunk of wood, that looked as though it has been recently dug out of somewhere, and dug out carelessly, so as to have been unnecessarily damaged in the process. 4. My own idea, on first catching sight of the object, was that it was a Roman relic of some sort,-relic of what I do not know, possibly of a coffin 5.The neighbourhood of the upper Thames is rich in Roman relics, and my surmise seemed tome a very probable one ; but our serious young man, who is a bit of a geologist, pooh- poohed my Roman relic theory, and said it was clear to the meanest intellect (in which category he seemed to be grieved that he could not conscientiously include mine) that the thing the boy had found was the Fossil of a Whale; and he pointed out to us various evidences proving that it must have belonged to the pre-glacial period. 6. To settle the dispute, we appealed to the boy. We told him not to be afraid, but to speak the plain truth: was it the Fossil of a pre Adamite whale, or was it an early Roman coffin? 7. The boys said it was The Pride of the Thames. 8. We thought this a very humorous answer on the part of the boy at first, and somebody gave him two pence as a reward for his ready wit; but when he persisted in keeping up the joke, as we thought, too long, we got vexed with him. Page L 9."Come, come, my lad!” said our captain, “don’t let us have any nonsense. You take your \ mother's washing tub home again, and bring us a boat.” \ 10. The boat- builder himself came up then, and assured us, on his word, as a practical man, that the thing really was, in fact, the boat, the “double sculling skiff” “selected to take us on our trip down the river. 11. We grumbled a good deal. We thought he might, at least, have had it white washed or tarred - had something done to it to distinguish it from a bit of a wreck; but he could not see any fault in it. 12. He even seemed offended at our remarks. He said he had picked us out the best boat in | all his stock, and he thought we might have been more grateful. 13. He said it, The Pride of the Thames , had been in use, just as it now stood (or rather as it now hung together), for the last 40 years, to his knowledge and nobody had complained of it before, and he did not see why we should be the first to begin. oe 14. We argued no more. 15. We fastened the so-called boat together with some pieces of string, got a bit of wallpaper and pasted it over the shabbier places, said our prayers, and stepped on board. 16, They charged us 35 shillings for the loan of the remnant for 6 days; and we could have bought the thing out -and- out for four- and -six Pence at any sale of driftwood round the coast. (Antediluvian —primitive, ancient , _remnant- relic, driftwood-wreckage/ waste/ trash) 1.1 Answer the following questions in one or two sentences only: Ixt=4, a. The Dead Sea surface elevation of the shore line is the lowest land point on earth, at 418 m below sea level, and the deepest hypersaline lake in the world measuring 67 km long, up to 18 km wide and 799 m below sea level in depth at its deepest point. 2. According to geological theory, approximately 2 million years ago, the land between the Rift Valley and Mediterranean Sea rose to such an extent that the ocean could no longer flood the area. Thus, the long bay became a long lake. During 12000-7000 years ago, the lake level was 100-250 m higher than its current level. Sometime around 10000 years ago, the lake level dropped dramatically, probably to levels even lower than today. During the last several thousand years, the lake has fluctuated approximately 400 m with some significant drops and rises. Jordan River was the only major stream flowing Into the Dead Sea. This wonder lake contains about 10 times more salts than others seawater. Because of such high salt content and dense water, one can easily float on it. The water is highly rich in varieties of salts and minerals; taking bath in this lake is good for health and for many skin disorders. Unlike normal sea water, which contains about 97 % sodium chloride as salt, the Dead Sea has about 8% sodium chloride, 53% magnesium chloride, 37% Potassium Chloride and others salts. Due to such high concentration of a variety of salts, except a few microorganisms and a few varieties of algae,, none of the aquatic animals or plants can survive in this water, hence the name Dead Sea. 4, Because of diversion of incoming water for agriculture purposes (in Jordan and israel), the Dead Sea is rapidly shrinking, Its level has dropped by about 25 m since the last 30 years. But scientists say that the Dead Sea may never entirely disappear as evaporation slows down as surface area decreases and saltiness increases. 5. tt is proposed to save this wonder lake by bringing in water from the Mediterranean or the Red Sea through canals. The plan is to pump water at a place called Eilat, tunnel under the highest point of the valley and then canalise the river of salt water as it falls (520 m) to the Dead Sea. The desalination plant would be constructed in Jordan. (a) On the basis of your reading of the passage make notes on it, using recognizable abbreviations wherever necessary.
