Unemployment is thought to be the effect of many issues in the society.

In society people
are stratified in accordance to race, gender, age, class, disability, ethnicity and even sex.
Unemployment creates another entirely different stratification in society. It is undeniable that in
most societies globally, people’s worth is measured by the status their employment brings with
it. What purpose does unemployment play in the society? Many governments around the world
attribute unemployment to the individual. Unemployment is attributed to the individual lacking
skills that qualify him/her for employment in various sectors in the society. Thus, a lot of energy
is being put towards training individuals in various skills in the job market and in the process, this
is creating a lot of qualified individuals for some non-existent jobs. The new problem that is
resulting is the need for jobs for the qualified individuals in the society.
The functionalist view is that unemployment plays a huge role in society. This view
suggests that unemployment is important as it creates work for welfare agencies, keeps the
discount shops working, center link staff and counselors employed. Unemployment also ensures
that there are individuals available to do menial work, the work other people do not want to do.
Unemployment should not be attributed to the individual but rather it is the lack of
positions for qualified individuals that is leading to unemployment (Katsas, 2009, P. 78).
Unemployment affects society in numerous ways, mainly the family, government, health and
educational institutions. In the family environment unemployment creates unwarranted
financial burdens which then strains the family in many other areas. In a family the lack of income
can lead to lack of basic human necessities which then goes on to strain society. The children in
these families suffer a disadvantage as most of them will miss out on learning opportunities. This
puts them behind on their search for employment due to their obvious lack of qualifications and
education (Gregg, 2001, p. 47). Some individuals turn to alcoholism, drug abuse, domestic
violence, and suicide. Unemployment is often the cause of much larger family and personal
issues. Unemployment is a large contributing factor to inequalities across society.
Unemployment increases the amount of crime in a country which negatively affects the
economy. As the government is charged with the responsibility to keep people safe it is strained
in resources in its efforts to maintain safety and fight against crime. Governments across the
globe absorb the weight and financial burden unemployment causes.
Unemployment is also associated with suicide and illnesses (Physical and mental). This results in
huge financial strain to the health care system. Unemployment makes it impossible for some
individuals to get the medical attention they need, as well as discourages regular checks up which
minimizes early detection of illness, only when the medical problem become serious are people
seeking treatment.
The role and impact of unemployment in my opinion adversely and widely affects every
aspect of the society the ideology that associates the value attributed to an individual with their
job title. The importance of the long-term effects of unemployment such as suicide, increased
crimes, mental illnesses and increased domestic violence. Are all reasons I would agree and
disagree the unemployment serves a function. Everything I wrote about is a function in society
one way or another. I am just not sure I can agree or disagree with the topic. unemployment I
believe has had a much deeper effect, which has now become part of the problem.
