TECTONIC– STRATIGRAPHIC
RELATION ALTIPLANO BLOCKS
Structurally, the “Altiplano” can be divided
lengthwise into two parts: the eastern and
western parts controlled by longitudinal faults
;and also sinistral faults that divide it in North,
Central and South.

These events formed structures by tectonic

inversion during the Andean compression, with
good structural conditions for entrapment.

In the Central and South Altiplano, there are

several structures to be explored, the
anticlines have been drilled in La Joya, Toledo,
Salinas de Garci Mendoza, Santa Lucia,
Copaquila, Colchani and Vilque. However, this is
not enough to evaluate the hydrocarbon basin
potential.

FEATURES
The best source rocks have been determined to

STRATIGRAPHIC CORRELATION - ALTIPLANO BASIN
REGIONAL GEOLOGIC SCHEME
The Altiplano is an extensive elevated plain of
80 km width and 150 km length. Its altitude
ranges between 3,650 and 4,000 MSL. It is
made up by deep trenches and Neogene
depressions infilled with synorogenic Neogene
and Quaternary sediments. In this plain,
isolated ranges rise, reaching up to 4,800 MSL,
and made up by Proterozoic, Paleozoic,
Mesozoic and Cenozoic sedimentary rocks.

The drainage collector systems are the Titicaca

Lake (3808 MSL), Poopó Lake (3686 MSL),
“Salar de Uyuni “ (3730 MSL) and “Salar de
Coipasa” (3653 MSL).

CONCLUSIONS
Petroleum system developed in central and southern Altiplano basin, is made up by source rocks
of “El Molino and Chaunca” Formations (Cretaceous) reservoir rocks of the “Tambillo” (Tertiary)
and Seal Rock in the Potoco y Santa Lucia Fm. (Terciary). However, Silurian, Ordovician and
Devonian rocks, could also be involved in hydrocarbons generation.

Anticlines with roll over in Cretaceous and Tertiary rocks are common, as in Vilque, Salinas de
Garci Mendoza structures ,etc. According to the structural domain type, Upper Oligocene reverse
anticlines can be estructural traps for further exploratory acitivities. (By: Araníbar & Martinez,
1990).

Bolivian “Altiplano” Basin has been partially investigated. Vilque well has shown trap conditions,
seal rock, reservoir rock and oil migration traces. Consequently, the “Altiplano” is likely to contain
hydrocarbons where Devonian and Cretaceous rocks are preserved.

Structural model is represented by pre-rift extensional Faults (Upper Paleozoic) that were formed
by tectonic inversion during the Andean compression.

As per, the last geological reports, an atractive area constitute the region called Fault Thrust Belt
“Faja Plegada y Corrida de Huarina” which is located near to the Eastern Cordillera.
