Winter, as you probably know; is the perfect season for building a new fountain or pond, or putting up the pergola or raised bed you have aleays wanted. “The box of spring-flowering bulbs gives me nightmares (have seen bulbs sprouting inside their packets, begging for sunlight and soil, in my’ very ven living room!) The laven wants is normal pre-winter attention (T normally feed mine through the winter so that dead, yellow grass doesnt give me the winter blues). The mountains of plane trce leaves have tobe put through the shredder before going onto the compost heap, but before I can do that, swe have to get the rich, mature compost ou to make space forall the fee plant material the autumn garden produces So, the colder it gets, the more Thave toda in my garden, Its easier to doa bit of landscaping in your garden when there is less growth ~ you can see the bare 'bones’ of your garden and plan better, and you can also get in under plants to aerate the sll, add compost and then cover the beds with a lush layer of home-made compost, [also find that I visit my garden centse more frequently during this time ofthe year. This is because 1 am looking for winter-flowering plants that I can plant in pockets all around my garden to cheer me up thraugh the ‘worst ofthe chilly season. Last year’ spring flowering bus that eft inthe soil already showed their tips in March, so they are mature plants by now, and soon they wll start flowering. The new bulbs Lam adding now (you can still plant spring: flowering bulbs like daffodils, tulips reesas, isis, sparaxisand irises until the end of May) will lower later, and this means I wil have spring-flowering bulbs flowering from the beginning of winter until late spring. In fact, my gardens best season is wintet. May 2012 SA Garden 7 Y mite mithap | would just lke to peint out an cetor in the February 2012 issue of your outstanding magazine, SA Garden: On page 63 a photo of the red spider mite is featured, but the rite in the photo isin fact, a velvet rite. These mites are beneficial predators and one of the largest rites - up to 15 mm leng. Red spider mites are much smaller — bout 0,002 mm. The attached photo is ofa red spider mite (Tetranychus urticae) of the Tetrarychidae family, or the rospotted spider mite because of the two black spots on either side ofits abdomen, whichis digested food. (The photo was taken by Charles Grifiths ofthe University of Cape Town) | also have an invitation, wick stems from the fact that | am desperately tying to find wiling ‘arms’ and ‘eyes’ everywhere at the moment as we just don't have the time to get out in the field and collect mites ourselves. | would really appreciate it ifthe readers could send us mites (anything that is very small and running around) Mites are normally microscopic, bout you can detect them with a 10x hand lens ‘An easy way to collect them is to ‘A My garden lest 8 SA Garden May 2012 half fil plastic containers (250 ml or smaller honey containers) with 70% ‘ethanol and then cut the leaves and stems of the infected plant off into the ethanol, put the lid back ‘and shake the container wel. This way the plant material is removed (otherwise it colours the ethanol 100 green, which makes it difficult to find the mites). The process can bbe repeated (with the same plant) if ‘eft that the first time round was not sufficient. The tightly sealed containers can then be posted to the following address: ARC.PPRI, Private Bag X134, Queenswood, Pretoria (0121, I avid collectors do not like the idea of the postage costs we ‘could always arrange something, Together with the mites we also need the collector's name and surname, the date, the plant they were found en, and the location (Gown or city, suburb, farm, ete). The GPS coordinates wil also be much appreciated, but are not essential Iwill gladly assist with any information on mites you might need in the future Prof Eddie A Ueckermann, ite specialist at the ARC:Plant Protection Research Institute, Roodeplaat, Pretoria Reader's garden Fd: Tooked at the photo again now and saw that you ae right. We featured ‘an article on flan diseases in roses in cour March issue with a photo ofa red spider mite onthe underside ofa rose leaf which 1 personally tok, and it does Tooke the one inthe photo. What is interesting is tat the tile creature seems redish when you see it from further away, but when you are close up with a camera it actually notre at al, How does this happen? I ‘ust admit I see red when find ther inmy garden, They wreaked havoc in ‘my garden this surnme, and they sil continue te do so. ‘There is @ variation in colour in the spider mite species | mentioned - they could be green or red. Usually the green form was referred to as Tetranychus urticae and the red form as T.cinnabarinus, but the identity of these two species isa research story in its own right, a5 some taxonomists regard them as. lone species.
