Observation Questions for ELL student(s)

1. What techniques/methods/strategies do you see being used with the ELL student(s)? Are
they effective? Why or why not? (Either specifically for the ELL student(s) or in whole
class/small group instruction)
Both ELLs are Ukrainian and are brother and sister. They have been in the US since March and
had some English instruction in the Ukraine. The boy has a higher level of language acquisition
than the girl. He will often help translate to the girl, yet they can both speak English. The boy is
more vocal in his English while the girl is quieter. I would estimate the boy is around late stage
three or early stage four while the girl is early in stage three. The instructor provides the students
with translated copies of notes and allows for them to take notes and use their Chromebooks at
all times to utilize google translate if necessary. This is incredibly effective. Additionally, the
instructor modifies exams for the students. For example, the instructor had the ELLs only take
the map portion of the text and discussed orally the written multiple-choice questions. The
instructor has the students sit closer to her desk and will ask the ELLs more frequently than other
students if they need additional assistance.

2. Do you notice any student behaviors that you would consider “out of the ordinary”?
Please describe in detail. (This applies to both the ELL student(s) and other classroom
students)
You can tell that the students are from the Ukraine because the dress with a very “eastern
European look” per say. As mentioned, the girl is quieter than the boy, but both are receptive of
English. Other than that, there is no abnormal behavior.

3. What type of interactions do you see between the ELL student(s), other classroom
students, and the teacher(s)? Please describe in detail.
The students are friendly towards the ELLs, yet do not really interact with them outside of class.
The only interactions were one student choosing one of the ELLs to be the next one to answer a
question on the board.

4. Identify resources/materials that are being used with the ELL student(s). Please describe
in detail how the ELL student is using them. Do they appear to be effective? Explain.
