“What Most Schools Don’t Teach”

As I watched the video, there were a lot of realizations that pop-up. Considering the
exceptional growth and importance of technology in our lives, it is really surprising that most
schools still don’t teach computer programming up until now. The thought that programming is
becoming the most in-demand skill across industries made me really amazed with how much we
depend on technology nowadays. When we wake up in the morning we use our digital alarm
clock, we make phone calls that are software-controlled, we shop online, download films onto
our tablets, we use programmed machines to produce our clothes, interiors, food and other
objects. These technologies play such a large role in our modern life.

I can already foresee a time when greater numbers of people become interested in
learning to program for themselves, but in the meantime there is a great case for making the
basics of computer programming a core skill at school, if and only if the schools would offer this
one. What made me look at it in another perspective would be the time when the successful
programmers said, “You don’t have to be a genius, you just have to be determined.” Truthfully, I
had this mindset that only math geniuses are suited to the programming world. But they made me
realize that it isn’t. You just need to have a logical approach and an ability to solve problems.
That video was an inspirational one for people with this kind of mindsets like mine. As schools
would expand access to computer science courses, more and more students would also want to
take part. Traditionally, computer science-related careers were among the least diverse
occupations in the world, but there are now strong signs that the trend is changing. Expanding
access to computer science education opportunities every school will play a critical role in
fueling growth in the student’s knowledge.

Although the fact that only few take part in teaching students computer programming
even if it is all over is just sad. We all depend on technology but none of us know how to read
and write codes. This is a sad truth. Not enough people has these skills because not all school
teach this one. It’s hard to imagine a life without software usage today. Most of the things we use
have been programmed by a developer and since these technologies play such a large role in
modern life, we need more people who understand how they work, not only for future job
opportunities but also during their current education. It’s time that those in charge of education
policy recognized the shift in employability skills and the need for a new generation of problem
solvers.
