Dear Mr. Smith,

MyThe essay I wrote is aboutof the discipline of Ecology, withbut since the discipline of
Ecology is so broad, I focused on the subdiscipline of infectious diseases. I chose this
topicdiscipline because it is bothextremely interesting and the articles all in the discipline follow
the samesimilar conventions. In the essay I write about the conventions of the writing in my said
discipline. I explain why the conventions are used,
I specificallydecided to write about the jargon, the structure, and the tone usedbecause
those where some of the things in the articles in the discipline. that I picked up on. Since this
were some very prominent things in every article, I figured that they needed to be analyzed. The
structure of the article was one thing that really popped out to me because if the layout was any
different the whole article would look different.
I formatted my essay in a way similar to the way articles would be writtenhow you might Formatted: Line spacing: Multiple 1.08 li
see an article in the discipline Ecology of Infectious Diseases discipline. I wanted to provide you
with an example of what to expect when reading in the discipline. I did this by adding headers to
the beginning of each paragraph and by including an abstract at the beginning of my essay,
which isbasically gave a quick summary of what my essay will be about. I formatted my essay in
this way to provide you with a slight example of what the structure would like if you were to
read an article in my discipline. My essay is written to inform you about what to expect in the
discipline of Ecology of Infectious Diseases because most of the articles written by those in the
discourse community have the same characteristicssynopsis of my essay.

Sincerely,.

Writing in the Ecology Discipline
Abstract
EachEvery subject can be placed in a discipline or a subdiscipline.discipline. The

discipline of Ecology has many subdisciplines and the one of which I am focusing on is the

Ecology of Infectious Diseases. In the discipline of ecology there There are specific conventions

in its writing. The writing in the ecologythis discipline and the writing style is much like similar

to many other science disciplines by being written similar to a lab report. . My disciplines in the

sciences share common writing conventions, but these conventions differ just enough to make

each their own discipline. People in the discourse community all follow a similar writing styles

which continues the conventionsstyle making this style appear to be the correct way to write in

the discipline. Since there is thought to be a correct way to write in the discipline people in the

community keep the tradition of writing in which the conventions going. The conventions used

in a discipline makes a big difference because if the conventions of another discipline were to be

used the writingswriting would not make as much sense.

Introduction
A particular area of study is calledreferred to as a discipline and each and every subject

has a discipline or subdiscipline that they are a part of.it can be placed in. A subdiscipline would

beis the areas of a subjectstudy that branch off. The subject of ecology from a bigger discipline,

like Ecology is a discipline, while the area of ecology of infectious diseases is and Ecology of

Infectious Diseases would be a subdiscipline. Disciplines will often haveshare common

characteristics and follow similar patterns in the articlesarticle’s writing by those. People in the

same discourse community follow the same rules fir writing in their discipline. A discourse

community is a group of people working to a common goalgood. My ecologyEcology of

infectious diseaseInfectious Disease course deals with the interactions between organisms of

infectious diseasesdisease, so the writing style for this discipline is muchvery different from a

writingwritings in the arts discipline. The jargon, the structure, and the tone of the writing

aredisciplines. Some of the main conventions in the Ecology of Infectious DiseaseDiseases

discipline. is the jargon, the structure, and the tone.

Jargon

The jargon in the Jargon is one of the most important aspects of the writing ofin the

discipline is extremely important. When talking about diseases using. In the Ecology of

Infectious Diseases discipline bacterial names is very common and the common readerare often

used because they are so many different types of strains of diseases. The average person would

have a great deal of trouble trying tonot know the bacterial names of diseases, while those in the

discourse community would understand what disease is being discussed. “Yersinia pestis,” is a

great example of a bacterial name that the common person would be unable to identify, however

someone in the discourse community would know that this is the name of the plague. The reason

why this type of jargon is used in the discipline is because there are so many different forms of

diseases that go by similar names. For example, Yersinia pestis is the bacterial name for the

plague, but there are different strains of the plague that go by different names, such as Pasteurella

pestis, which is similar but not the same. The jargon is necessary for this discipline because a

common term like the plague is not precise enough.to be able to tell the strains apart. The jargon

doesn’t end at the bacterial names but also types of vaccines, such as “attenuated recombinant,”
which means that the virus is weakened in the disease.1 Other uses of jargon would be

“zoonosis” and “endemic,” which are terms that describe the type of disease that is occurring.

The common person would likely be unable to identify the meaning of these terms, but they are

used in articles for this discipline because others in the discourse community would understand.

The jargon is one of the most common conventions in the discipline because the terms help to set

it apart from other disciplines in the sciencesThe jargon specific to the discipline of Ecology of

Infectious Diseases is an important convention because few to no other disciplines will use this

jargon setting it apart from any other discipline.

Structure

Articles The layout of articles in the discipline will usually followbe the same layout. For

discipline in the sciences, a. The lab report format is very common in the science disciplines, and

ecology is one of the disciplines that follow this format. Most articles will haveIt is common for

there to be headers before each section or paragraphat the beginning of a new subject in the

article, this is done to prepare the reader for the next part. they are going to read and so it is

easier to locate things on the page. Examples of some of the headers are “Abstract” and

“Background.”2 Most articles will have an abstract at the beginning, an abstract is a brief

summary of the content of the article. Statistical data aboutThe abstract is there so the diseases,

like thereader can get a quick overview of what will be in the article without having to read the

whole thing. The number of people effectseffected by the disease or the length of diseases

incubation and how long it tookmaybe the size of the particular outbreak to get to its size, are

often included in the writings in the disciplinearticle as statistical data. The data can be presented

in tables or in the writing, The Nosocomial Colonization of T. Bear article the information is

presented in tables, while for the Effects of vaccines in protecting against Ebola virus disease:

protocol for a systematic review presents the data in the paragraph.34 Most 5
It is very common

for the articles will havein the discipline to include an analysis of the data directly after so the

reader can understand why the numbers are important to the data is presented in the article.

BothThe structure of all the articles in the discipline is also havethat there are references atwhere

the end ofinformation was found for the article, which and this is very common for other

disciplines in science. The reasoning behind some of these structural conventions is the sciences

because things like having headers makes finding where information is easier because if the

reader simply wantsthe authors want to understand what the disease is then they can look for the

introduction.give proper credit. The structure of the articles in the is important because it can

make it easier for the audience to follow along with the work. The uses of headers, data, and

analysis of data give this discipline a lab report like layout, which is one of the most efficient

ways of presenting information in the discourse community. Since this is such an efficient way to

present information it is used by the Ecology of Infectious Diseases discipline is similar to a lab

report because the lab report style is an efficient way for information and data to get across.

Tone

The tone of the writing makes Tone can make a big difference in articles because if the

tone is more playful the articles.article won’t be considered very serious and important. The topic

of infectious diseases is not a topicsomething that should be written with a light-hearted tone. In

this discipline the tone “Symptoms range from transient flu-like episodes to septic shock and

death,” this is an example of how the writing is very straight-forward and to in a serious tone.3

Looking at the point. The information is presented and then analyzed withline you can also see

that it is a statement less little room for opinion. Most of the information is presented very

factually and is not written in a way to make the reader think and form their own opinion on the

subject like many disciplines because it is considered a fact. The writing being written so that

things are fact set this discipline apart from other discipline, for example in the social sciences

would have the reader do. For is usually supposed to think but in the Ecology the articles are

written so everything gets right to the point andof Infectious Diseases the reader does not haveis

supposed to wait forthe accept the evidence to be presented. This is similar toinformation as fact.

Many other disciplines in the sciences because they do not try to have something that will catch

the readers attention. The tone for this discipline is always serious and straight-forward because

it gets the information across the fastest. The tone in article in the ecology of infectious diseases

will do this because they have worked to solve and research that the said thing is fact. This

discipline is very blunt and serious because the issues of the subjectin this discipline can be grim

and since itthe factual natural is part ofvery common for subjects in the sciences the information

needs to laid out..

Conclusion

The discipline Scientists all around the world publish work in the field of Ecology of

Infectious Diseases has many defining features. Scientists all over the world publish worktime

and all the writings in this discipline and almost all of the articles havefollow the same

conventions. Some of writing. The main similaritiesthe most prominent and important

conventions in the writings in the discipline are the jargon that is being used, the structure of the

articles, and the tone that is used. The jargon is important because it really sets the discipline

apart from others in the sciences by using terms only those in the discourse community would

understand. The structure is the groundwork for the articles and acts as a layout that will give the

reader an outline of what they are reading as they read.. The tone works to make the articles

appear professional and serious about the material. TheseThe conventions are used by

mostalmost every author in the discipline and has become the norm making these conventions be

classified as “good” writing in this discipline.
